norway-scotland- or spain (ebro)

Its my 30th in september, and a family member is treating me to a weeks fishing somewhere. Il prob be looking to book something in the next month or so, for a weeks fishing in late summer and the obvious thing would be to to book a weeks carp fishing in france or spain. But as ive done this already im thinking with the idea of toying with something different. The ideas i have include flying to barcelona heading to the river ebro for catfish, driving to scotland and having a week out of oban for skate, or going to norway to try for cod.

Getting info on ebro is easy as i know people who can price it up for me, but i dont know anyone who has fished either scotland or norway. Is the time of year important? is aug-sep a good month or these places? How much is a package? Would it be easier to trail my own boat to Oban or does anyone have experiance of decent charter skippers and costs?

Any help for norway and scotland would be most helpful.

Thanks

Danny

If you want to go skate fishing in Oban, speak to John Keggie, he used to be down at Poole (before that he was at Oban), he books the hotel in the marina he uses and it's a quiet little place just 10 minutes from Oban itself. Other than skate, he also does stopover trip round the top of Ireland for other species.

If you want to do Norway, I think the biggest fish come in at Spring time, but I could be wrong, Tom will be the bloke you wanna ask, his mate Dave does a lot of Norway trips.

If someone is paying for the trip and money is no objest I would defo go Norway (plus also remember the euro is more or less 1 to 1 for the pound, and I think it will go lower in 2009, making any euro trip expensive).

do they do self drive boats in oban? i dont think there woule be enough to warrent nearly 600quid a day for the boat hire sad.gif

Don't think there are any self drive boat in Oban, but Coddy has some friends who fish Oban every year, he maybe about to get you some marks. It's a long drive up to Oban tho, It takes me 6 hours to Glasgow from Andover and it's best part of 2 hours to Oban from Glasgow by car.

Give John a ring and see if he can organise an individual day around the time you are up there. Either way it won't be cheap.

Oh.... if you decide to do the Oban in your own boat, don't forget the water is something 400+ deep, make sure you have a long enough rope.

Norway doesn't use Euro I think ( like Sweden ) and in fact I think Norway might not even be in the EU ?

Norway uses Krona (?) and it's not part of the eu but is part of the european economy region oe something, so although not part of europe but still have good dutyfree allowance.

So the weaking pound might not have the devastated effect as the euro land.

Hi Dan

If you fancy Scotland after the common skate there are a number of charters who operate in the area.

I would choose someone like Ian Burrett, have a look on his web site http://www.onyermarks.co.uk/

Skate fishing can be long waits and not always getting amoungst the fish. sad.gif

However with Ian's fleet he can launch from a number of venues and get into fish with a number of species.

The hospitality is superb up there and with the long evenings many people take a beach rod and fish into the night.

I would suggest to fly up to Glasgow and take a hire car to the North West. With 4 of you it may be the cheaper option.

Another web site worth reading is Davy Holt's who must be the most knowlageable person on the Common Skate http://www.catchalot.co.uk/index.htm he also has some charter boat suggestions on his web page.

I am sure you would have a great time where ever you go, but at least in Scotland it is not too far to bring back some fillets.

Hi Dan

Contact Martin Founds who owns Anglers World Holidays on 01246221717 he has all manner of trips on his books, including Carp, Cat AND Norway.

Martin is the main man behind the trips seen in Sea Angler mag etc and is also the guy that Dave Lewis guides for and Chris Tarrant, John Wilson etc book their trips with. In fact, Chris and John are close personal friends with him and would be unlikely to use anyone else.

If Norway is your bag then Northern Norway is the place for BIG fish, even if there are fractionally (only just) less than the South.

Skjervoy Fish Camp up beyond Tromsoe is probably one of the best known bases and it's where you'll find Troms Explorer, the boat I delivered last Summer.

Troms Explorer can be chartered as an individual for less money than you may think if booked as part of a package including flights and accomodation. You slip into part of a group of others and be guided directly by either Holger Buricke (co-owner of the boat) or Kanut Arne Mickelson who is the other skipper regularly seen in the various TV programmes about the area.

You can also get self drive "Tinny's" and Arvors depending on what you really want. Self Drive is great for a break, but guided / skippered will get you amazing fish in the boat.

If you call Martin, drop in my name and say I mentioned him. wink.gif I am due to go at least once next year as sort of payment for my help with Troms Explorer. Any more browny points may help me get out there several times.

Good luck

Tom
