Hi Guys

I am thinking of getting a Yam 4hp as auxiliary engine on my warrior 165. Firstly will I need a short shaft (standard)i.e. 15 -16 inches or 20-21 inch shaft. Secondly can anyone recommend a good bracket to mount it on ,or are there any to avoid. I will appreciate any help you can give me.

Many Thanks

Mike F

Hi Mike

I had a 165 and you need a long shaft auxiliary.

I bought my mount from the guy I bought the boat from, it did not have one when I got it, but I would recommend one that has adjustable height. Most brackets are listed to certain HP but a 4 or 5hp engine will work on nearly all of them. The plastic mounting pad models seem ok but if you were going to keep the boat some time, the plastic my age over time so you could go for the wooden pads but these will need a coat of something to keep them looking good and to stop it absorbing any water as so stop the rot.

Suggest you keep an eye on EBay or Boats and Outboards to see what prices they go for.

I would also suggest that you make sure you can lock the steering or tighten the steering collar on the auxiliary as you will find it is easier to steer the boat by using the main engine as a rudder.

Mike, If you have trim tabs make sure the bracket is set lower enough to get below these.

Also use some 18mm ply as a backing plate to the bracket to 'beef' it up as the position to be fixed to is quit thin. unsure.gif

Regarding the make of bracket, all i can say is try to get one with not to much play in the spring when not in use. I.E i use a 5hp Honda and get a fair bit of play, bouncing (bracket from Warrior)

Hi Mike,

I have fitted a Warrior provided mounting bracket (rated for 15 hp) following their instructions and its works well. I used a ply backing plate smeared with car filler and mounted it on the starboard hand side as the bilge outlet was already located on the port side. This has the benefit of being able to stand in the middle of the boat to steer when using a tiller extension. I would advise lifting the main engine rather than using it as a rudder in order to decrease drag when powering the boat with a small 4 hp engine. I will try to attach a photo! Please PM me for any detailed fitting advice you might require. As the others have said - a long shaft is required!

Best regards,

Harry
