Braid

I am trying to sort out the braid for the reels and there is so much variety out there I am looking for pointers if anybody can help.

First reel (Misc s.stee) l spool is for the general bay fishing and I thought 15-20 lb, .....Type ???

2nd reel (Shimano LD) is for the odd occasion I go out a bit further and wreck.....this I thought maybe 30-40lb ....Type??

Would I be better (bearing in mind the reduced Dia ) just to go 30lb for both??

Can I buy bulk ?? what length/size spool etc for each??, backing required ?? are some brand names better than others..

At the mo I have them both loaded but with "old" mono..would I be advised to keep the lower coils as backing ???..Need to change before serious fun starts.

SO much to learn....so little time!!

Hi Dave,

For what it's worth I have used PowerPro for the last 10years with great results for durability and strength. I have green,yellow and red....the red is far better if you are on a charter boat or fishing with a number of others as so few people use red and when the invetable tangles occur...I can easily identify my braid...and if everbody starts using red then I will change to yellow.

I use 30 lb for most of my fishing except for bass on the float and bream for which I use 10lb and 8lb respectivley.

I purchase all my braid from the link below....very reliable site and will combine the postage on multiple spools. His stock changes quite frequent and gets new stock from the US. Check his prices compared to tackle shops....

Its always advisable to use backing on your reels....I normally put about 150 yards on braid on the reel unless fishing mid channel then increase to about 250 yds. Don't forget to rotate your braid after a season...ie put onto a spare reel and then transfer onto another reel and put the end you have been using for your terminal tackle back on to the backing, then you can comfortably get at least 2 seasons usage.

Hi Dave

 

Try UK Hooks their Blue Marlin braid is good and not bad price for 1000 mtrs. Use mono for backing and keep your spools nice and full, a full spool is a much faster retrieve. And don't forget to use a good leader.

looks like I will need about 600m of sea braid so will go for the nearest / higher denomination at 1000m. 30lb.......may do the Tomo thing with colour......sounds sensible to me, using a 10-20 ft leader of clear mono, any colour main line would appear ok.....??

I will need some 10-12 lb for my river feeder too .......and some mono changes required on other reels too.

OOppss.....the cost is going up !!
