Member Removed
Just had to go out on Monday, what with the sunshine and the light winds. So off I went in the inflatable around to the usual spot near H.H. groyne. However the only action was the smallest pout ever. So conceding defeat I began to drift back on the tide towards Mudeford, when I saw a large splash about 20 m away. So I cast out my feathers with a 3" lure on the end in that direction. Next thing I know I am hauling in my first ballan wrasse and my largest fish to date at 4lbs 13oz. Well according to Hugh F. W. they are only good for stock. Don't you believe it. After gutting and rinsing I lightly oiled it and baked it in foil. The tough skin then just peeled away and I could easily separate bones from creamy white flesh. So far it has made delicious fish pie and excellent fish cakes and there is still some left over in the freezer. What a difference between a blank and once again nature providing us with a lovely treat p.s. I found the taste quite pleasant -- quite sweet with just the right amount of flavour. Sinbad
Well Done, Alan.... it ws looking lovely on Monday, out of the office window!!! You must be the first to try a wrasse, but also dont despise the humble pout, as they make good eating as well. If you are arround that area, ragworm will certainly catch you a few wrasse as well as the chance for alot of other species. Paul
