loyal royal
At last November is on the horizon, bringing the bigger snapper with it . males normally appear in the gulf first, keen to put on condition prior to spawning. they will fall to just about any bait , but the big slabs of fresh kahawai or whole jack mackerel when anchored , or jack macherel, squid and pilchard while drifting , are best . soft-plastics will often out-fish fresh baits on the drift. Althought I grab the soft-bait out-fit on most fishing trips , I perfer to feel the take of a big snapper while straylining with mono . Feeling the line accelerate off the reel and lifting the rod to set the hook is far more exciting in my book. It is also a lot smoother than the jerky thumps that go through you with the non-stretchbraid! The mokes (small islands in the gulf) are at their best in November. Bigger fish have been hard to find in recent months , but November should be a lot better. dritfting more ground to be covered, but anchoring allows you to fish down a berley trail and bring the fishto you . I have enjoyed success with both methods, so it comes down to personal preference. Great Barrier Island has plenty of fish ; it is just a matter of getting the to bite. The flats out off rosalie bay hold lots of above-average pan snapper , with some 8kg fish thrown in . Outside tryphena and out towards Channel Islands is always worth a shot, as is the northern end off miners reef and the needles . Little Barrier has been fishing well all year , and will only improve as summer sets in . Trevally off Te Titoki point are fighting-fit and best targeted using a consistent berley trail and floating back compact baits on small hooks and light line . Some of these big trevallys look like small kings when they appear in the berley . Snapper will be scattered around the Island , with good schools coming into the gulf through the craddock channel . Flat rock should start to hot up a bit , with the dusk being the most productive time of the day . Fishing around kawau will improve , especially out around Motuora and through the blanche channel . This area is not all that deep , and some big fish will be hanging around . Drift or anchor- the choice is yours . petesnr
What's the numbers for this Hauraki Gulf? Might give it a try next time I'm out--sounds better than the 50-50 Banks. Peter
