long wire or circle?

The start of the plaice fishing is nearly upon us, As a beach angler I have always used aberdeens for my end tackle whilst fishing for plaice, I havn`t done a lot of boat fishing for many a year & added to this I have heard a lot about these circle hooks in the past couple of years & wondered if they would be any good for presenting worm & fish baits for plaice from the boat.

What would the more experienced boat anglers recomend, Fine wire aberdeens or the circle hooks such as the Mustad Demon circle fine wire?

Long wire everytime. Circle hooks will not present the bait as well and worms are also a bugger to get on them. A really good hook, IMHO, is the VMC Vanadium Red Worm -E7054 obtainable from UK Hooks HERE. They are slightly circled and the shank is offset but are easy to load. They tend to self set and usually in the lips; I use them for most of the smaller species like flatties, bream, etc. I commend them to the house.

Mike,

Im no plaice fisherman but i'd go with long shank fine wire based on the fact that circle hooks work best when a fish picks up a bait and runs with it. Not the sort of behaviour i'd associate plaice with imo

You've not fished in the same places Paul.

We get 'em on 130 stand-up and when they hit the Adromeda on the right rigger they'll take off about 200 yards on the first run before even slowing to turn the bait.

That said, it has to be a J hook in the Andromeda or the frills will cover it, but if fishing a big pitch bait like a bridle rigged small Bonito, Mullet or Flying Fish then it as to be a circle to insure getting that big ol' red spot right in the scissors.

Sorry... this cold, wet weather has given me Cabin Feaver again.

....wishing I was Marlin fishing.... weep.gif

For Plaice, long shank aberdeen as Paul says... all the better for a Plaice to spend some time munching on.
