Stuie reacted to Adam F in Is Alderney fished out?
Was following a couple of Facebook discussions this week where anglers we shunning Alderney trips due to the gradual demise of the fishing.

Certianly our experience has been one of gradual decline in the last few years.

A decade ago it was a real Mecca, somewhere a long way off shore but where you could virtually guarantee good fishing compared to back home.

Is it a phase? Or do we have bigger and faster boats and more people go, is it now was fished out as back home?

    Junior Comp Rules 2018

    Competition Dates are:
    21st / 22nd July - fishing 1 day only - nominate day on booking-in
    18th \ 19th August - fishing 1 day only - nominate day on booking-in
Sun 9th September - followed by presentation at Cobb's BBQ Area

There are 3 opportunities for a junior to fish this comp - the junior may fish up to 3 times - once in July, once in August and once in September. When there is an option to fish Saturday or Sunday - the day being fished must be stated at booking-in.

    Fishing time:
    09:00 - 15:00

Style of Competiton - 2 comps in 1:
    - Specimen Competition - Under 16yrs - largest specimen award over up to 3 comps. Please record your juniors' best specimen by weight, photo required and to be submitted with form. Usual Club Specimen weights used.
    - Species Hunt - split in to 2 age groups - under 11yrs & 11yrs+ to under 16yrs.
Score sheets need to be sent to open@pbsbac.co.uk within 48 hrs of each comp - these will be made available on the forum or emailed by request.

5 hooks at any one time over max of 2 rods (easier for juniors can use 1 rod to feather).

    Area to fish:
All boats compeating will fish within Club Waters and within 5 miles of land (northern boundry of Club Waters). The captain of the boat deems what is suitable for crew and craft. Whether the competition goes ahead will be decision of Safety Officer\Comp Organiser by 19:00 the night before.

    Safety:
The decision whether each competition goes ahead will be made by the PBSBAC Safety Officer \ Comp Organiser day before each competition. A post will be put on the forum the night before each competition to confirm the decision.

    Species scoring:
Each Junior will be issued with a Species Hunt Score Sheet. Each species of fish caught will be awarded with the points stated on the sheet. Should a junior catch more than one of the same species then each additional fish will count as an additional one point. Its is important that the Parent/Skipper log all fish caught on each competition day. Please submit within 48hrs of the comp start - execpet on the final day, please bring form to Cobbs Quay by 17:00.
    - Slight change this year with max of 20 for each species counting and only the first of a species taking the "species points", the rest score 1 point. Also, added an unlisted species - again 20 max of each and only 1 point each.
    --  e.g. Bass + 5 points - so 2 bass = 6 points total, 20 bass = 24 points, 30 bass = 24 points

All Juniors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

Note: If a competition day is cancelled it may not be re-scheduled.

Juniors must be registered at least the day before each competiton starts (execpt for the last date (Sept) when 2 weeks notice is required). Registering is via the Comp Organiser or on this forum thread below.

Juniors over 11 are expected to bait up, cast and retrieve fish on their own with minimal help.

In event of a tie on points, the younger competitor will finish in the better position.

    Comp Organiser's decision is final.

    The score sheet below:

We have been working closely with the charity change step , A team of veteran peer mentors who use their own experiences to help veterans confront challenges in their lives, and to navigate and engage with support services throughout Wales.
Fresh from going up the country’s highest mountain Snowdon , our veterans were given some brief paddle skills training before spending an hour touring the lake  in groups of three . Some even demonstrated some enviable self rescue techniques 😀
A cracking day afloat with a great group of lads and lass in a stunning location .👍

Not much around between the piers Friday, Managed a couple of Pin whiting is all.
Tried a few of the rock marks but tough going as there is Net or Pot markers from Poole rocks to Bournemouth pier rows and rows of them. So keep an eye out on a big tide some where not very well marked as always!
Moved into the entrance and as it was quite took a few drifts along the bank and then past the castle. Some very nice Ballan wrasse  where taken on each drift a couple over 5lbs, which on light gear is good fun.

We had a few worms left to drown Saturday morning as the boat was still in it would be rude not to! Decided to try the whych channel as we have had a few nice plaice from there in the past, And I saw a few fish where landed on the plaice chase a few weeks ago.
No plaice but we did manage a few nice size Bass which  would have been good eating size a couple of them, but they where returned

Saturday gave the top side a good clean with the family,Sandy loves playing with the pressure washer so I was able to clean sink area etc.
Sunday with a mild hangover from a great dinner dance....thanks for organizing Mal
I went out about 8.15 with bream as my target .
Tried by Ballard just below Joint Venture but missed my only bite so moved into Swanage bay to find Chris and Mal there on kinkyfisher
Wasn’t to long and they come on the feed slowly with largest at 2 1/2 lb all went back as full of eggs, only 4 or 5 but target achieved. It then died with the tide so tried several places in the bay but my head was banging so in just after lunch.
Great to be out and she goes great with the brand new leg

Slightly over eagar start to get out this morning, took one look at the breakers at the end of the channel and went back into the Harbour for an hour. Even after the wait there was only 2 foot 6 inches outside the last channel markers, had to quickly lift the engine more and coast over the realy shallow bit. No fun at all, on the way in the breakers were quiet lively and still only 3 foot 6 inches at the end channel and no end markers have been positioned.
Went down to Milford to try for a plaice or two, no luck with the plaice but I did manage 4 nice thorneys in 40mins, tons of baby dogs and a pout.
Moved back to Christchurch and had 3 small eyed rays in 20 minutes and then the dogs moved in. Back home for  for 3.30pm and a wash down, first trip without any hiccups always a good start to the season.

The boat was a fin-keeled fibreglass Westerly GK29, 29' long, around 3-4 tons in weight. They've been around since the 70s.

A yacht like that should be stored ashore resting on it's keel in an adjustable steel cradle giving secure support under and around the hull to stop movement. Additional props would be needed bow and stern to keep it absolutely secure, and braced like that, it should be able to survive winds of 100 mph plus, even with the mast up, and genoa furled, as in this case.

The fact the owner was present when it moved suggests he was working on the boat, perhaps antifouling, and may have accidentally or deliberately moved one of the supports (something that is banned in most boatyards). I'm sure an investigation will show if it's a failure of the supporting cradle, or the owner's activities that caused the tragedy.

While my heart goes out to the deceased and family at this time, for club members working on boats still, please DON'T move any supports for maintenance. Leave it to the professionals, or wait until launching time for a last minute touch-up of the "patches".
