Hi Martin, Yes, this had crossed my mind. To be honest the size I have now (an A4 from memory) struggles a little with the 7.5kg that's on there at the moment so may be worth doing anyway. What size buoy's do others use on which size anchors? Cheers, Andrew

Assuming people are using an Alderney ring technique. Can be partially demo'd at a club meet if needed! Rob Hi Rob, Yes, been using the Alderney method some a few years now, just managed to get it completely wrong on this occasion.

Yes, had a few goes at getting it to stick and made one horrible mess of retrieving the anchor, learnt alot from that one.......We were concentrating so heavily on getting the anchor up safely I didn't keep an eye out where I was drifting and went straight over someone else's anchor rope. Luckily the chap was very good about it and after lots of profuse apologising we both got our anchors back. Thanks for the advice Tony, I have an identical setup and just tend to tie off once I have got about the right length out. I think I saw you at one stage whilst I was getting in a real pickle with my anchor retrieval, very embarassing........ . Sods law the one time it would happen we were surrounded by boats, got it up perfectly at the end opf the day with not a boat in sight... Crickey Neal, 15KG, you must eat your spinach Sounds like an uplift to 10kg might be worth considering. I heard you on the radio a couple of times, sounds like you had a better day than we did, one dogfish and a strap conger. Thanks all for the advice, Andrew

Hi All, Just a quick question regarding anchoring. I was over by the needles yesterday and for the first time ever had real problems getting the anchor to hold bottom. I have a Merry Fisher 705 with a cheap bruce copy as my fishing anchor with about 30' of 8mm chain and 600' of rope. I arrived at the needles and deployed the anchor with what I thought would be an ample length of rope for the depth (90') and tide (Spring). After it failed to hold I let out what must have been about 400-500' of rope and it still didn't hold. Try again, up with the anchor (made a complete horlicks of it , first time I have got that badly wrong) and go further along and closer in to try and lose some tide, anchor still slipping. The GPS showed the accasional 0.5knt speed and we moved off the mark I made very very gradually. I have fished that area before on big springs without issue with the same boat and the same anchor.... Has anyone else had this issue before and if so how did you overcome it? Cheers, Andrew

Hi Mike, Our best wreck was half way out and the others were in and around the rips. PM sent. Andrew

Hi Charlie, I didn't try the brittle stars, don't know where they are. We tried drifting some of the big contours round the rips area and that's where Matt lost a couple of really good sized fish. Stayed mainly to the wrecks though. Andrew

After a bit of planning and re-planning we decided to head out for the wrecks first thing. Plan of attack to to spend the bulk of the day in and around some of the wrecks on the rips stopping off at a couple of inshore wrecks on the way out and the way back. First Wreck, First drop and: Second drift and: After bringing in a few Pollock each we decided to motor out to the mid channel wrecks. We were not out as far as the separation lanes but I was surprised at the amount of large tankers passing us in both directions in and around the rips. We kept a good look out in the absence of Radar and AIS. Various wrecks tried in and around this area and a few more Pollock running into double figures, a small Ling and a Gurnard (didn't know they would take a shad) were taken. Mark lost something huge which he couldn't stop stripping line until eventually the braid ended up at the other side of the reel from the level-wind and ....ping. My money was on a good size Cod. We were tight for time as I needed to get my boat lifted out for a cursory look underneath at 6 as I couldn't get the damn thing above 14 knots for love nor money and so rather than try a couple of others we headed back to the same wreck we tried on the way out. 2nd drift and: A Pollock which looked much bigger then it does in the picture.... I didn't have my scales with me and I am hopeless at guessing weights but estimates from the crew ranged from 10lb to 14lb. My guess is around the 10-12lb mark. Happy with that.......... A hugely enjoyable day afloat but a frustrating day from the boat perspective. Bum was clean as a whistle. Next, engine and failing that, weight distribution . Cheers, Andrew

Thanks for the info Charlie, just re-checked my tides and changed plan, straight for the Rips and some wrecks as you suggested. For some reason I had slack water about 1pm, doh! Cheers, Andrew

Not a problem at all, I thought the rips was the brittle stars

Hi Folks, Looking to get the first proper trip of the summer under way on Friday with a couple of mates and was thinking about starting over dancing ledge for some Bream and then heading South over slack and trying a few wrecks on the flood tide. Looking at the chart the area of rips south of Poole looks quite interesting, has anyone fished this area? Is this the area that's know as the brittle stars? The weather looks OK at the moment so hopefully it won't be too lumpy. There are a few wrecks in and around the vacinity which I thought I would also give a go while i'm there. Anyone else out on Friday? Andrew
-
Cheers Charlie. Yep, 6oz is probably a little OTT Cheers, Andrew

Hi Folks, Looking for a semi-decent breeming outfit for the summer. Last year I used my suveran 12-20lb boat rod and avet MXJ reel but looking for something a little sportier. Ideally I think I would like a fixed spool reel and a soft tipped rod with the blank capable of fishing with weights up to around 4-6oz up to around the

I only live a couple of miles from Corsham and am down at my boat in Cobbs almost weekly so if anyone wants me to do some fetching and carrying then let me know. Andrew

Hi Rob, This is good advice, just a week to late for me....... Unfortunately the git who has got it has full access to my wife's emails, just hoping she didn't have any passwords or financials on email. Andrew

Hi Neal, I did ask them and they said they would look into it. I haven't heard anything yet so I'll chase up later in the week. Andrew

Hi Mike, I just moved from F pontoon to B pontoon as I thought it would be more secure and more convenient, wrong..... Would be great to meet other club members, mine is the Merry Fisher on B19. Andrew

Hi all, Bad news i'm afraid, my boat got done over on its mooring at Cobbs the other week. The really irritating thing is that I was around the boat in the marina at the time. I'm not sure how they got in as there is no real sign of forced entry and I'm usually very careful about locking the boat when I pop off to the bar/toilet/mates boat. The only thing they took was my iPad which was in my travel bag on the floor next to the main berth. They declined to take the brand new portable VHF in the locker and other bits, just the ipad. The thing that get's me is not just that we have all our photo's on there as well as my wife's email but that sickening feeling in the stomach that someone has been rooting round our personal stuff on our boat. Just make sure you take extra care with your boat security, hopefully my insurance will cover the iPad. Andrew

Hi Chris, I have had a look at two of the wrecks which I know are accurate on Wrecksite and both have slightly different co-ordinates on Southwestmafia. They are pretty close though so should enable you to find the wreck with your sonar. Andrew
-
Just had a look at that Rob, URL now added to favourites , really useful looking link so thanks. Andrew

I've got the G2 vision card in my 4010 and I don't use their wreck coordinates, I use the ones from wrecksite.eu and they are generally bang on. I find that the Garmin charts don't have that many of the wrecks listed and some of their coordinates are a little off. You will also need to zoom in quite close to get enough detail for them to show up. Cheers, Andrew
