  1. Toerag Whilst all the leg driven boats that have been mentioned are very fast and in a light sea they are excellent they have ridiculous maintenance costs. On top of that I would 100% x 100% prefer to be on a shaft drive boat in any form of nasty sea and certainly in any of rips and races. In addition IMHO they are far better on the drift or at anchor. They are not anywhere near as fast (mine tops out at 23knots light), but will still beat 90% of the charter fleet out mid channel and where leg driven boats were turning back into Braye harbour in Alderney this August due to very nasty notherly wind over tide conditions three shaft drive boats headed home across the channel. All of those boats were very small for that type of journey. They were an Arvor 25 (basic fishing boat), a Quicksilver 750 Weekender (family boat you can sling a rod over the side from) and my little Merry Fisher 695 (a fisher with comfort! ) IMHO you need to weigh up: 1) Do I need 30+knots? 2) Do I need 30+knots that I can only use occassionally? 3) Do I need the servicing costs and aggrevation of an outdrive leg? 4) In a nasty head sea or on the drift, where do I want the centre of gravity on my boat? 5) In 4) above, would all that speed be any use to me anyway? 6) The only real downside I can see to the shaft is that it is susceptible to picking up ropes / nets etc. This can be partially alleviated by fitting cutters and or prop protection. and so on on. IMHO If the boat isn't big enough for an inboard then modern outboards are fantastic, safe can be lifted clear of the water are cheap and easy to service. If the boat is big enough to have a diesel inboard then have one, on shafts!
  2. Hi Guys Does anyone have a really old cheapo solid glass very light "Cornflake Packet" rod. I am willing to pay a couple of quid for a "junk" rod for Bassing in the marina. Most of the Bass hide in between the boats and the pontoons and you have to literally poke the rod into tiny little gaps which is resulting in my decent rods getting more than a bit battered when anything over a few inches long takes the prawn. You know the type of rod... Those indestrucible solid things with a few poorly whipped cheap rings. Let me know Tom
  3. I feel very pelased with myself that only having been in the club for a week I am already a Pout Catcher which is more than I usually manage when I am fishing. At this rate I would hope to have a Cod by Christmas. Thanks to this forum my angling skills are improving daily and I haven't even been fishing.
  4. Very heavy seas off Portland have been reported. Hurricane force winds and 100 foot seas about to hit Poole Bay. One member of PBSAC has already taken precautions and renamed his boat.
  5. Hi Was trying to find the "Marks" page, but am either being exceedingly stupid or it isn't there. This would be really useful to me as new to the area. If it is there, please point me in the right direction. Many thanks Tom
  6. Hello Duncan I seem to recognise this picture from somewhere!!!??? Well you and a number of other culprits have recommended me to join PBSBAC, so I did. ....nice to see my camera phone photography skills have preceeded me onto the forum! All the best Tom Oh, yes we did recover her. More than a bit worse for wear we managed to drag her out. The engine cowling is probably the only part worth salvaging.
  7. Not being able to drive two at the same time I am selling my own Cap Camarat 625 with Suzuki 140Hp 4 stroke outboard with stainless prop. The boat was delivered and launched in August 2004 (2005 model) and comes complete with: Bramber roller trailer, Colour Navman 5500 GPS / Plotter, Navman 4100 Fish Finder, CD / FM Stereo system, Console Cover and for those that want to enjoy the sunshine you have the choice of a removeable (for foredeck space) picnic table or sun deck cushions at the bow. The 625 is infact 6.4m overall and has a very wide 2.48m beam. 136ltr built in fuel tank is located in a large cockpit locker with room for storage. The console is cavernous and will take all the gear you need for a day out with further storage underneath the port and starboard forward bench seats. She wil be sold complete with lines and fenders and anchoring equipment which includes 100mtr line, chain and large ball fender for driving out the anchor. If you aren't familiar, the Cap Camarat 625 is similar to a Boston Whaler Outrage, but with more flowing lines. With the 140Hp engine she will top out at mid 30 knot performance and is happy cruising at anywhere up to high 20 knots. Tonnes of all round deck space make this perfect for fishing, day tripping and water sports. The whole package is less than one and a half years old and is sold with nearly a year remaining on the engine warranty and one and a half years left on the boat warranty. She was sold by me to me back in August '04 and has been fantastic fun, I just don't get the time to use her anymore. Currently lying in Southampton, but soon to relocate to Saltern's Marina. Any questions then please feel free to PM me or call on 07780687795. Viewings are recommended for anyone looking for a nearly new 21 foot centre console sports fisher. Save
  8. Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I hope to become a regular and not too annoying face at PBSBAC. Hopefully I may learn a bit from some of you and although it is limited I may even be able to share some information. I am a distinctly average angler, but have a reasonable knowledge of boats so if anyone has any questions then please feel free to ask and I will always do my best to help. Hope to meet the rest of you at some time soon. Tom
  9. Hi Sam I don't deal with Offshore boats from new. The brand I represent is Jeanneau which are aimed at the leisure market and suit comfort loving people like me who worked out that whilst I wanted room for 10 to fish I only actually went out with 3 or 4. Our "Fisher's" go up to 32 feet, but this is more "Big Game" style than typical of what the Uk market uses. Offshore's on the whole are sold "part built" to commercial and charter skippers. We do get one or two through from time to time on brokerage and I will certainly keep an eye out for you. The best way to buy an Offshore would be either buy the hull, deck, wheelhouse and engine (recommend Caterpillar 3126) and then get a professional to finish her for you. Brand new, all up, a 30 can be put together for around

    Gloves

Nice pair of wakeboarding gloves work well when on my open boat, but on the pilothouse I don't use any and hands stay nice and toasty. If I have to stick them in a bucket of frozen squid or something it is easy enough to warm them up on the stove. But Wakeboarding gloves are the answer as far as I am concerned.
  11. If anyone is in need of assistance with regards to boat handling, training courses etc then I have a number of good contacts that I am happy to pass over. Don't ask me, I am the world's worst skipper, but I do know a number of people who I use regularly through work and I would be happy to pass over their details. All the best Tom

    Hello All

Hello All Just wanted to say thanks to all who made me welcome at last weeks club meeting. What with work n stuff I don't get as much time for fishing as I used to, but being part of what seems a great bunch of people and an active club should hopefully see me stretch my line a little more often. One or two of you may have noticed that I sell boats for a living. A complete mixed bag of styles, but including some "high end" private angling boats. After hearing how indespension are offering club members a deal and without wishing to make this sound too much like a sales pitch I would like to make an offer of my own (the committee can make this as formal or otherwise as they wish): Any club member will be offered an instant 5% discount over and above any other deal negotiated. This substantial cash saving is offered with one or two small proviso's: 1) Any potential buyer must let me know they are PBSBAC members straight away 2) They must let me know details of any part exchange straight away 3) I can only offer this on new boats from the models in my range If you are thinking of changing, want more comfort just want a chat about boats then pop into my office at Saltern's Marina, the kettle is always on. If you don't know my range of boats then visit http://www.southernmotorboats.co.uk If you don't think they are real fishing boats, I can promise you they are top line and offer loads more comfort and stability than similar sized boats that we are more familiar with, all for the same sort of money and often less. I own two myself (shared with friends), a 23 footer which is often seen in Alderney and a 21 foot sporty one which is great for bombing around and getting up creeks etc. Still don't believe me? See what Sea Angler Mag and Boat Fishing Monthly have had to say in previous and coming reviews... Oh dear, I didn't mean to go into one, but the 5% discount is a genuine offer to all club members. If you are bwosing this forum and not yet a member of PBSBAC bare in mind that membership is
