Rob
As long as you are a club member and catch it within club waters you can claim a record. (St Catherines to Tip of Portland.)

We do catch some stonking Black Bream each year with one or two members really knowing how to weedle the specimens out. Yep, May is Black Bream time. I really must get stuck in this year as I have been too lazy the last couple.

Maybe we will stay inshore and get the spinning rods out this year, at least on the big tides Giltheads are a bigger species, so lets all hope that they establish and get a chance to grow. I have only caught small ones. Charlie

Gnasher
always nice to have a photo though PJ Paul, shouldn't a photo be a minimum requirement for a record claim? We have had jumbo Golden Grey Mullet that were thicks, huge 20lb undulates that was a mid double thorneback, big tubs reported as reds, people catching small blondes and thinking they have caught a huge spotty, and people weighing fish in a soaking wet landing net, complete with pole and not deducting the weight of the net.... Trust is a good thing, but some people are, especially those new to the sport may not have the full understanding of 1)proper fish I.D and 2) know how to weigh fish accurately. I just think that a club of this size should look at the new records and ask every claim to be every claim submitted to the comitee has evidence to back the claim, and it be for the comitee to make a decision accordingly as to whether the claim is 'cosher' or not. A good quality pic will give you the fish I.D and also indicate the if the size of the weight claimed is similar to size the fish looks on the snap. TomBettle
For the benefit of Gnasher, here is my recent Silver Eel record Claim. My claim for a 343lb Mackerel was considered dubious by the committee until they saw the photo. It was a little large for a livebait and was caught before I had the common sense to take part in much catch and release. And my 2008 record garfish doing their usual acrobatics ....this one IS an Undulate Obviously, most of us can ID the fish we catch as my pictures clearly prove. codpiece
I was under the impression that part of the reason for 2 persons in a boat was that you had a witness for club record claims etc as in competition ?? but I expect to be corrected. Maverick Martin
Derek The two man rule is for our competitions only and is there purely for safety. Any member can go out on their own freelance and catch then report a fish Martin
Gnasher
Tom...nice one......But i do remember you wrongly agreeing with a few of us that Mike Fox's mullet, and my one i landed were golden greys....and they turned out to be thicklipped....even with a pic we got it wrong.... It would have been so easy to have claimed, as my witness at the time thought it was....but i think when the pics were published on here, someone checked properly and found them to be false claims..... Anyway, i dont really care, just thought pics help...... Next subject....

Anyway, it's only a bit of fun and in jest, but the point of my very first post is that I suspect the Bream are welcomed new member has caught may well have been Black Bream rather than Giltheads. Gilts grow remarkably big and they are caught in this area (within club waters) at up to double figures, but the locations for these bigger fish are fairly closely guarded secrets by many. It would be great if a member did catch a "proper" one. Tom
TomBettle
Danny Just checked the post you mentioned about GG Mullet. Yep I did "think" that Mike's was a TL, but also "thought" that yours was a GG and a HUGE one if it was. Interestingly, I think less of us will have confused it if we had seen them in the flesh? Food for thought. The very worst ever misidentification I have genuinely been involved in was when fishing for Conger with Gordon Moore that he had a Smoothound that had teeth so we called Tope only to realise on looking at the pictures it was actually a Spurdog! My own point of view is that yes, we do have club records and they are a good guide as to how the anglers are and how the fishing is in our waters, but we are a fun club, run on trust and with no big prizes on offer if I get a club record all I really get is a sense of achievment. I am not overly fussed who is the holder of what record. As said before, it's all a bit of fun! Tom
