Graham Nash
I am sure I should know this but to assist with my setting up ready for drifting and with my trip planning, when the tide is on the ebb does it run from East to West or the other direction?? Thanks.
TomBettle
Ebb is east to west and flood west to east. Out mid channel in our neck of the woods once running properly the ebb tide actually runs ese to wnw. Also, a common cock up is to assume that high water on your tide table coincides with the flow direction swapping round. It doesn't. For example, high tide this evening is at about 19.30, but the flood tide mid channel is still moving until about 21.30 / 22.
Graham Nash
Thanks Tom, It was partly to help with my trip planning in the hope that maybe I can "go with the flow" rather than always be battling the flow of the tide. Many thanks.
great white
Graham you can get tidal info off of a lot of plotters now , which helps during a trip. But a better source is a tidal atlas, that shows what the tide is doing hour by hour. but Toms rules of thumb are correct, flood tides run towards the Isle of Wight, ebb towards Portland. 60 degrees and 240 degrees, rather than east west. Mid channel slack water is about 6 hours after HW Dover. Ask me over a beer to explain the rule of twelths, regarding the tide strengths.
