Newboy Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Not convinced, can't see any hole left by a spear anywhere on the fish. Quote
djredrupp Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Blow taking bass poppers and bream gear... TomBettle Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Not convinced, can't see any hole left by a spear anywhere on the fish. Top left of gill plate. Think it's a bigeye, possibly a small school Bluefin. Defo not a Yellowfin. Quote
Matt Posted July 18, 2011 Report Posted July 18, 2011 Well i did catch a herring this year on the shambles. Still a bit sceptical though. If i hook something i cant stop whilst bassing ill have another suspect. Quote
Jsplace Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Having never caught tuna despite a fair bit of trying out in Oz, what's the chances of landing a fish like that on 12-20lb class gear which is about the heaviest I ever fish? What a cracker! Jason. Quote
Adam F Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Looks credible to me. Spearfisherman see alot more than all of us lot, even us divers - they are silent and make no noise or disturbance. According to the Crystal Vis website, 5 tuna have been landed the last few days off Portland, even a couple on rod and line. I'm down there on Weds, looks like I could be trolling for Tuna! Quote

What a cracker! Jason. I've had quite a few at that size when sailing in foreign parts. I've caught all of mine on 20lb line and 20lb rods, the fish are dogged but relative to wahoo and dorado are not quite so fast. I'd be confident of landing fish of that size if I had at least 200m of line. Now all we've got to do is find the shoal..... Quote
plaicemat Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 The darn things seem to be more common than haddock off Christchurch. Terry. Quote

Mike Fox Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 I can feel the urge to troll plugs and live mackerel at 6 knots for 120 miles in the very near future.... Mike Quote
Rob Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 I remember the commercial who caught one from ChirstChurch bay a few years ago - photo in echo etc: http://www.bournemouthecho.co.uk/archive/2...h_out_of_water/ Quote
ChrisE Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 I can feel the urge to troll plugs and live mackerel at 6 knots for 120 miles in the very near future.... Mike Strangely, I did just that across Lyme Bay en route to Dartmouth on the yacht about ten years ago. For all kinds of reasons I wasn't paying too much attention to the gear but when I did I found that I'd lost the plug plus about 100m of line. Up until now I'd assumed that I'd hooked a pot line but now I'm not so sure........ Quote
niggle Posted July 19, 2011 Author Report Posted July 19, 2011 While i was at weymouth my mate Terry was at anchor with two live joeys on the bottom with 1.5lb leads when both went uptide very quickly and broke both lines,he thought he was dragging anchor until he looked at his other two rods still out the back baited with rag! Another angler also using live joey had line ripped off and snapped off which at the time he had presumed was a shark Sounds to me like we should have our reels loaded to max and drags set properly and if at anchor be prepared to bouy it off,................... Or is there more chance of winning the lottery? Quote
great white Posted July 19, 2011 Report Posted July 19, 2011 Heard that there were three landed aty Weymouth recently only small fish, but its a start. Charlie Quote
