Crossy
Hi Folks, I am a newbie to the Poole area and the PBSBAC and need a little help. I am itching to get out for a fishing trip (am moored in Cobbs) and looking at my work schedule and the forecast there could be an opportunity to get out on Thursday. The weather is showing week N/W on XC and 8mph S on met-office..... The tides are showing 8am HW and 6pm LW for Swanage (Not convinced these are right though, shouldn't they be about 11.5 hours apart?). I was thinking of getting out for a wrecking trip but my question(s) are: 1) Will the sea state be OK, I would guess so especially if XC is the more accurate one but even so, would an 8mph Southerly chop things up too much for a small boat? 2) Does anyone have any suggestions for wrecks? I have a Merry Fisher 625 and so am confident up to around 10-12 miles offshore. I have found some like the Carentan, the Sargasso, the Upstart, the Braedale etc on Wrecksite but I have no idea whether they fish or not. PM's or posts very much appreciated but understand if you'd rather not. Cheers and hope to meet some of you at the meeting next week. great white
Hi Andrew welcome to the Club Because the tides around Poole are a little "special" with a double high tide between lows, it is not just a mathamatical equation to work out the Slack periods. Most of us look at the LW times and work from there LW Thursday for Poole 15.15, and the tide is fairly small so the flow should not be too strong. It would be really usefull for you to get a tidal atlas for the area, these are based on HW times at Dover. a rough guide is Slack in the channel is the HW Dover and HW+6 hrs Dover Thursday HW Dover is 10.09 and 22.23 slack in the channel will be about 10.00 and 1600 I can not advise on what weather you should go in. [Obviously the calmer the better] as I do not know your experiance. The decision is yours alone, my advice would be not to push your limits If you think it is not good enough, do not go. ref the wrecks On the drift you need clear water and that is probably a little further off at anchor the vis does not matter and the closer ones can do well. The good news is that the numbers on the wrecksite are fairly accurate so with patience you should find them. If new to this pick a good big one that stands well above the seabed. If its just the wrecking experiance you are after look at the huge Aeolian Sky Its more than 10 miles away but not far offshore, let the ebb tide push you there and the flood tide push you home. Look it up on the site, but just in case its invaded by divers look at a couple more in teh area as well. I expect that others will add more info PM me if you need more help. AS I said earlier, Do not push your limits If in doubt do not go. Charlie
Rob
Small boat - Merryfisher 625, I dont think so!!! Depends what you are comparing it with!!! We had Free Boys come over to Alderney in some snotty weather and I think she is a Merryfisher 600 Marlin. Like Charlie says, we cant tell you whether it will be ok - that is your call and your call alone being the skipper. However, on that forecast I would probably take my boat, don't be afraid to get to the harbour entrance and turn back! Also, it can be worse in the harbour than it is outside, though that is the exception rather than the rule! Use Easy tide for online prediction of tides and look at the chart, there is also a tide chart book for Poole available, I find that excellent and it shows the double IOW tides we get. hth Rob
Crossy
Hi Folks, I guess what I am really asking is what the swell size is likely to be. As there are slack tides and low winds then I am guessing it is worth the trip from where I live (near Bath) down to the boat for the trip. Could always stay inshore looking for Bream if it is too uncomfortable out there. Cheers Fellas, Andrew
Rob
Windguru and windfinder will give swell predictions, height and timing between. Direction of swell is also important with regards to swell \ tide against wind. Thursday 0.6-0.7m @ 9 secs wave direction from West - i ecpect will be great on the flood esp as wind north \ NW \ W. http://www.windguru.cz/int/index.php?sc=47897 http://www.windfinder.com/forecast/poole_branksome Channel buoy data live-ish: http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=62103
Crossy
Ah Hah! According to my Reeds small boat almanac the high water for Portland will be 17:50. Assuming the wind doesn't forecast to increase to any more than the current 7mph N or N/W then this could be quite a pleasant afternoon for drifting the wrecks. Thanks for all the help fellas Cheers, Andrew
