lofty
Got out today. Caught the same fish 20 times(top 1) And a bigger 1(1lb 11) Are they both whiting? Only kept 1 because not sure of the take size but it was nice shallow fried, a bit coddy. Answers please
ospreyman
look like whiting to me, very tasty when very fresh
great white
Lofty definatly whiting or "Channels" Very good eating and prefered by some to cod we usually try to only keep a few larger ones over 1.5 lb as they are best fresh. 20 in the Kayak is a good catch well done. Mike Fox
Good stuff Lofty. I tried for the whiting today East of the Spoil Grounds, but none landed, and not even any bites. Looks like they might have been closer in! Well done, Mike
Stuie
Didn't go too far out today - a small bass in the haven, further into the bay we had many dogs, a pout and gurnard which kept the interest up. What a lovely calm day!
mike02380
Thanks for the report Lofty, good to see the whiting are biting - they'll make a nice fish and chip supper.
lofty
And what about the take size. The little ones were all about a foot long or mackerel size. Would you treat them like mackerel ? I admit I had one head hooked as a live bait but nothing came of that

Would you treat them like mackerel ? I admit I had one head hooked as a live bait but nothing came of that Lofty They are the stable diet of cod, its well reported that they make a good live bait for them, but to be honest I have never had much luck. We tend only to keep a few of the bigger ones, [1.5lb plus] for the table. But any over 1lb are good to eat In the open next week we will be running on a minimum size at the scales of 50% specimen size , for whiting that will be 1lb 12oz Charlie
