great white
Hi all as usual at this time of year, the weather is keeping me from going fishing and I keep on getting asked what I want for Christmas. So I start having a look around the internet and following up on a bit of an idea that I may have a look into using speed jigs over wrecks in the summer. When you look at Shimano ones the price of them is bad enough to simply forget it, but there are many on ebay and such that are about a fiver. I know that abroad they have huge success with these and tend to use specialised kit, but I intended to try with my normal rod and reels for now. Has anyone tried it? Did it work? Or is it just a hard work way of catching a few more pollack? Charlie
Graham Nash
is this any interest Charlie? http://www.planetseafishing.com/tutorials/...y-assist-hooks/
ChrisE
FWIW, we have a few which we bought in the US a few years ago and I use them as the 'weight' for mackeral feathers/lures to give the bass something to chew on if they are below the shoal. I've had a few fish on them but have have never tried them as pure jigs.
djredrupp
I brought a cheap one off Jerry's Fishing to try in Croatia, I cant see what difference an expensive one would be to justify the price increase! I would imagine that if you have success Pirking, that these would also have some success.... however Ive never caught anything off one, (and never tried it in the UK...) though we never catch fish... But cant hurt to have something else to fiddle with on a slow day! Dan
niggle
I've used them and have quite a few in mackerel colours main advantage as I've found is the assist hook doesn't get so snagged on wrecks,I bought a bright red one from Mark in alderney and it done very well on the cod compared to the rest of the crew apart from one that was using red/black twin tails who had less cod but his were of a better stamp. Would I use them again.....yes but only if the twin tails didnt work Nige
Newboy
Some skippers/anglers use them below a feather over @ portland race for the bass. On certain tides they out fish plastic on portland rigs.
Stuie
Check these out for value. Jigs I use them below launce & mackerel feathers - they seem to improve response. I've yet to give them a proper trial for more sought after fish.
great white
Thanks for the replies guys 2 years ago in Alderney I had an absolute demonstration of how a shiny pipe type pirk attracted the launce. It made a huge differance Plain lead no launce, shiny pirk loads last winter I made a few and this year they have caught bass pollack mackerel launce and even a turbot on the shambles. Some Club boats use pirks and get a fair number of pollack and Cod on them. I started to have a look into this after seeing some great youtube moments. Three things to consider 1. I have never enjoyed pirking, [and I think that they spook the fish.] 2. The cost of the jigs, if they get lost as often as pirks 3. It looks like hard work, if all it does is attract a few pollock any more thoughts? Charlie
