Swainiac
Hiya guys, sneaked out, again, yesterday, on our monthly charter with Due South, and had a few hours SW of the Needles. Tides were larger than sunday, but still smallish, and we managed a few good whiting. A change of mark, to south, made the difference......bagfulls of whiting to around 3lb, a pollack of about 4 lb, spotted ray, doggies...loads! pout, makeral, scad and a beautifull full bodied cod of almost 28lb. This fish took a tiny slice of macky on feathers left for whiting, on a carp rod, small baitruner loaded with 12lb mono...it took over half an hour to land, but well worth the effort. Skeggsy had another cod of about 25lb, i think, dont know to what bait, and he also had a pollack of 9lb first drop just outside the Needles, so I guess they are showing. I had a few whacks, and lost what i thought were whiting, then pulled up a squid of about 18inches...which was duly hooked up onto 10/0 grappling irons, and slung back down, alas, not a snifter on it!!!! A great day, we couldnt have wished for better seas, and hoping the weather stays good for the best tides of the year this coming weekend.....tight lines lads. shytalk
the weymouth boats were being bothered by a shark trying to steal the bass last week off the west buoy and grove so rthere must be a few about
great white
Thanks Rich I had not heard of the shark, but it proves that the water has not cooled to much yet and there must be some fish around to keep such a preditor about. Club record is vacant!!!!!!!! Charlie
JIMBOB
The shark was hooked by andy Adams(skipper of random harvest) on the slates It took a bottom bait then got tangled in the outher lines ,they got it to the boat where it started thrashing about and broke free. They wernt sure how big it was but the tip of its tail of its tail was about 3 feet long!! James
great white
It would be nice to see, but not on the 28th at the scales Charlie
Swainiac
As I have vollunteered to help steward............Martin, does stewarding mean holding meanies like threshers???? Rich
duncan
starting to wonder if the 'take' the Sunday before last that saw a 100lb brand new wire trace 'parting' could have been one of these big brutes? This one in particular stood out as it was a rod in a holder with the drag slackened a bit but not loose, rod just bent over and wham, slack in around a second later with the wire trace cleanly cut ........ Could we consider whether we would have to bring such a beast in on the 28th if 'landed' or whether photographic evidence would be appropriate for certain species with the competition committees decision final on adjudgement of weight. What an earth do you do if you land a 50lb tope at 1000h on the slates? Conger will survive and most of the rest are either pests or food but given the current water temperature shouldn't we set an example here? Maybe getting the skipper of another boat to witness the fish and it's release for specifically tope and sharks?
great white
The trouble is Duncan where do you draw the line????? while flounders will survive and lots of congers have been released over the years after weighing. Other fish have been released that may have won one of the lower prizes had they been brought ashore. As an open competition over a very wide area it would be very difficult to steward afloat. I tried to get Frank alongside for his eel on a reasonable day but could not. but to be honest that eel would not have survived anyway with a big gaff hole in its lower jaw. Its the only comp out of all of ours through the year that fish have to be weighed ashore, so I am afraid we have to accept it for this year at least. Nice to know what others think please post your feelings lads Charlie
duncan
Couldn't agree more Charlie - I am fortunate and wouldn't think twice about returning a shark/big tope on the 28th. I can see others that could have a lot more anguish over it! The club wouldn't normally have an issue I suspect - how many tope or sharks have been caught in the clubs November open before? Allowing the angler to be credited with say 75% of the estimate by an independent skipper and returning such a fish rather than weighing it in is the sort of thing that enables the principles of returning fish - again I emphasise I am only raising the issue in respect of large tope and sharks; and definitely not eels! Maverick Martin
Duncan I am of the same view as you; I wouldn
great white
Martin is it to late to amend the rules now? They are going to be given to the competitors when they sign in so an alteration could be made to those that are yet to be printed. a few flyers around the signing in point could also be put up say "Sharks and Tope can not be weighed in" That way if anyone has a problem with the amendment they still have a choice not to enter. GW will not be landing any that is for sure. If we get one we will be taking photo's and putting it back. Charlie
Maverick Martin
Charlie I have aleady printed all the forms but I will put a poll on here and if the outcome is no sharks then so be it.. but please be quick all, I dont want to be printing stationery the night before the comp Martin
