Maverick Martin
Ventured out with Dean on Maverick. The weather was okish, clear skies, sunshine but with a cold stiffish force 4/5 northerly blowing. Sea state Moderate which made it interesting standing up at times. Anyhow with the sea following us it was a comfortable ride out. Because of the large tides we decided to stay fairly close in. We decided to go to the old spoil grounds approximately 2.5 miles off of Old Harry. A boat was already there so we looked around for a fishy looking spot and dropped the hook. small Whiting and dogs the only result for our efforts. The tide picked up then our anchor gave up its hold so we considered that an opportune time to make a move. We steamed North east just watching the sounder to try and find a new bit of ground, up came a bank on the sounder so after a quick look around it we decided to give this lump a go. Well it fished really slow only giving up two Bass around 3lb each (on 6/0 pennel rigs loaded with half a dozen squid) plus a couple of dogs. A shame really as it did look very fishy, we will be giving this spot another go when weather dictates we can't get out to far. At around 4pm we decided enough was enough and made a move in which was a little bumpy punching into those white tops, but the sea soon flattened as we got under the lea. All in all a slow day but still better than trying to earn brownie points Martin
