Newboy
Looking at the Navamn 5500 plotter. The difference between the internal and external antenna are about $100. Is it worth the extra dosh, or would the roof on my boat hinder the internal one receiving information?
Paul D
Kam, I have a GPS/Plotter with an internal antenna. I get a reasonable enough signal despite the roof, however, I cannot yet pick up the WASS satellite which is low on the horizon. The signal is affected by the roof but I get around 5 satellites comfortably. In retrospect I think I would have gone external though, if only because it looks slicker but at $100 diff ..... By the way are you buying form the states. I got mine from a comapny called boatfix - very very good.

domino
Kam, You may have to pay Import duty, at appx 4% of the total inc shipping. You WILL also have to pay VAT, at 17.5% of the new total, when it arrives in the UK. If it is sent by USPS, in the states, it will then br delivered by Royal Mail over here, who will also add a handling charge. Alan
Adam F
Kam, I bought the Garmin 182C about 6 months ago from http://www.sportextreme.com/pz802x20281yUSD/ This was the cheapest place I could find on the net. They are based in Norway, Denamark or somewere like that. They are a cracking unit, and I would well recommend them. Check the site, but mine with ext. antena was -
Newboy
Reason I wanted a navman is so that I can connect my navman DCS to it. Somehow the it doesn't work with the gps I have (although it should do). I thought you are codding today with PJ and JB?
Adam F
The Navman VHF will connect to the Garmin - no probs. I was meant to be codding, but left for work yesterday at 4.00am and didnt get home until 9.00pm last night....little tired! Plus I have mountains of work to do today, and I'm out Friday anyway, so I took a rain check. They havent called me yet, so I guess no cod..... Bob F
Kam, With the boat you have, you should go for the external antenna. The cabin and bits of kit will block some of your signal if you have the internal type. Double check that the price of the unit already includes an external antenna. Most of the time the antenna is included, and the total price should only be about

Bob F
Kam, This does sound strange. With the Garmin GPS (not plotter), the external antenna version is about
