When in Norway some target the Halibut every day of the 6/7 days of fishing, I and many others target all species and sizes. It is the lure of guaranteed fish, outstanding scenery, different locations, fishing buddies, malt whisky (from UK), no distractions and constant fishing talk that you can't get at home.

The Alderney trip and Oban provide the same draw, I wouldn't target the huge Skate at the expense of other species, but it would be interesting to see one.

I was looking through my dads fishing scrap books yesterday, once upon a time mid 70's there was common skate caught from the needles... It's a shame we need to travel the distance and hall the fish up from the deep because of careless fishermen off the past who would kill these beautiful creatures for no reason.

A seventy year old fish couldn't taste that nice.... Same to be said for the shark fishing could it not?

catch, kill and discard.

Why would I like to go to say I've done it.

Would I like to do it on my door step. Yes.

Hi yes I have been to Scotland a couple of times and fished for the Common skate

Best was over 200lbs which took about 45mins to land.

I was fishing with a friend called Davy Holt who is/was the guru on Common Skate and was involved in the tagging & protection of the species.

We also caught the rare (to us) Black Mouth Dogfish plus other species

If you are looking for a super charter then I would suggest you contact Ian Burrett http://www.onyermarks2.co.uk/main-home-page/ what he knows about what and where to fish the local area could not be beaten.

If you decide to hire a car from Glasgow airport, be aware that in some locations you need to catch a ferry across various stretches of water, they do not run 24hrs a day, miss it and you have a long wait or a long drive around. There are also limited fuel stations so keep the tack topped up!

The roads up there are quite narrow and mainly single carriageway so your speed will be very limited by other traffic.

Fishing, bird life and scenery are all fabulous however.

Dave

Perhaps it is a case of 'not knocking it' until you try it, and I don't mean to be disrespectful, but even as an ardent angler I simply can't find anything appealing about winching large commom skate from great depths. Is it just me?

You have got to try it first, I have caught conger close to 100 lbs and even that pale into insignificant when you hooked into a big common skate, the fight will generally take around an hour, in that hour, you will experience high (when you finally got it off the bottom) and low (when it take line and go back to the bottom and stays there), and high and low, .... I had it up and down 3 times before it stayed off the bottom.

The feeling of helplessness when it wants to go and all you can do is hold on to your rod and pray it doesnj't break.

It's one of those experience that will stay with you for a long long time.

What worried me about our recent holiday was returning to the UK and feeling that fishing was not worth doing.

Sure we caught some great holiday fish that really can pull hard. and in 10 days fishing we had something like 30 species from rock, beach and boats.

The fishing and holiday were special to us. All of the planning and preparation was well worth it.

Since coming back I have been out three times, broke a Club record inshore and had two great trips on the tope a bit further out.

So traveling for really big fish is sometimes the only way, but there are rod benders in Club Waters that would bring a smile to any anglers face.

I've done a fair few international trips, some have been brilliant and some just ok.

When I get back I am always more than happy to go fishing here. Tope, Conger cod, flatfish Bass and such like all good.

The only thing I really struggle with is fishing for mini species and LRF holds no attraction.
