Mikey B Posted May 14, 2016 Report Posted May 14, 2016 Hello All, Henry B is due an update with regards to the plotter etc. All of which is now over 12 yrs old. Still works ok but now out of date. Looking at a Simrad Go7 with a free chart and an Icom IC-M506 AIS both of which are MNEA 2000. I know the Icom is a bit expensive but you only retire once so it's now or never. AIS is new to me so any advice on this would be appreciated. Mikey B Jim 1 Quote

jerry.shutter Posted May 14, 2016 Report Posted May 14, 2016 Hi Mikey, I have AIS on my new boat which is a quite wonderful tool for your armoury. I am still very much learning about it and did not know I had it when I bought the boat !!! The alarms needed turning off as they keep going off with the number of AIS registered vessels going in and out of Poole!!! I still am no expert but it is another great device to have on board. Good luck with your refit. Quote
Mikey B Posted May 16, 2016 Author Report Posted May 16, 2016 Thanks for the response. Which cartography is best for the Poole bay and Salcombe areas. Navionics or C map I will need a chart to cover both areas. Mikey B Quote
Rob Posted May 16, 2016 Report Posted May 16, 2016 I use the navionics gold & platinum and have the UK wide ones. Not worth restricting to just one localised area, as, I think the UK wide ones sell better second hand. Though you do need to load / select the regions to use as you move areas. Rob Quote
Mikey B Posted May 18, 2016 Author Report Posted May 18, 2016 Hi, Before I take the plunge and buy an AIS setup. How many club boats actually have AIS ? Mikey B Quote
Stuie Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 We don't record who has, or hasn't, had AIS fitted Mikey but it must be an excellent safety feature. Quote
great white Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 I use both in my two plotters , to be honest the navionics gold is much closer to the look of a paper chart I do not have AIS so can not comment Quote
gjb Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Same answer as on your other thread I do Graham Quote
Kingfisher 126 Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 I have AIS but only receive, a great safety feature when you are wrecking and when there is any fog about. Would recommend if you are having a new system fitted. The charter boats have a feature that they can turn off the boat name when they want so they are shown as an unidentified vessel. You wouldn't want to give your best marks away!!! Quote
Mike Fox Posted May 18, 2016 Report Posted May 18, 2016 Just had AIS installed (class B, from Digital Yacht), together with new Garmin Echomap CHIRP 75sv plotter with integral charts, and side scan sonar. There's a full review of AIS systems in the May edition of the Yachting Monthly, if you would like to see an objective comparison. Also included two Ocean Signal AIS MOB beacons for lifejackets. In the event of a MOB, the lifejacket being triggered sets off the beacon, passing GPS position to the plotter, and rings a DSC alarm to alert off-watch crew. Really effective new technology to aid MOB recovery, designed for all places where your own boat is the main chance of rescue, and works even in thick fog or at night.Learned about this new kit as part of my RNLI activities, and was so impressed I decided to proceed. Happy to share more if interested.Mike Stuie 1 Quote
