All the lots have been generously donated by members, supporters and friends, and all proceeds will go directly to support Angling Trust and Fish Legal's part in a new joint initiative with World Wildlife Fund and The Rivers Trust to restore our freshwater ecosystems and fisheries to good health. View the auction lots and make a bid Angling Trust agrees new contracts with Environment Agency and Sport England to protect and grow fishing The Angling Trust has agreed a new 4-year contract with the Environment Agency to continue delivering a wide-ranging package of initiatives to improve and promote angling in England. The contract is for approximately £1.15 million a year but due to falling sales of fishing licences and grant in aid from the government in recent years, the size and scope of the contract has been slightly reduced. The EA contract will be complemented by a new £670,000 contract which the Angling Trust has also secured from Sport England over the next two years to promote participation and competition angling. Read the full story Sea angling gets huge boost from Commons committee For the first time in history, it looks like our efforts to get recreational sea angling written into legislation as a recognised stakeholder in the UK’s marine fishery could be about to pay off. A House of Commons committee has recommended that there should be "explicit reference to recreational fishing" in the new Fisheries Bill. Up to now sea angling has had no formal status and no access to funding. Read more Illegal fishing 'a real threat' to bluefin tuna recovery in UK Angling groups are challenging politicians across Europe to embrace the development of a live release recreational tuna fishery – or face an increase in illegal commercial fishing. Bluefin tuna have hit record prices in the Japanese fish market recently with $3 million paid for one specimen. Even at the more realistic prices of £2k to £3k a carcass, the Angling Trust has warned that these iconic fish will still be a big attraction for criminal activity. Click here for Fishinginfo Have your say on coarse fishing's Close Season Anglers have until March 11 to officially have their say on the Coarse Fishing Close Season on rivers in England. The Environment Agency is consulting on three options: keeping the current close season, changing the dates of the close season, or removing it altogether. Hull and Leigh next stops for Clubs & Fisheries Roadshow The Angling Trust is running a series of roadshows across the country to provide tips and guidance to clubs and fisheries wishing to improve facilities and provide better, safer and more enjoyable angling for all. These afternoon events, delivered in partnership with the Environment Agency and funded from fishing licence income, are open to any angling organisation and are free to attend. Next month the roadshow will be visiting Hull and Leigh in Greater Manchester. Find out more Key roles for volunteer bailiffs Carole and Hayley News from Fish Legal Scottish Parliament set to take action on salmon farming Scottish Parliament’s Rural Economy and Connectivity Committee has published its report into salmon farming in Scotland concluding that the existing regulatory framework for aquaculture is “not fit for purpose”. The report specifically notes Fish Legal’s call for “a dedicated regulatory body that has statutory responsibilities for managing the impacts of aquaculture on wild fish” and has recommended that the “regulatory gap” should be filled. Full story Call for measures in Scotland to prevent damage from scallop dredgers Fish Legal and Angling Trust have put their names to a letter given to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon calling on the Scottish Government to take urgent action to stop illegal fishing by scallop dredgers in Marine Protected Areas around Scotland. Coastal community groups, environmental NGOs and angling groups supported the call.
