The Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Efra) Select Committee has just published its report following evidence presented in December by the Angling Trust. Read more here Sea Angling Industry Boost Business servicing sea angling in the UK received a major boost this week with the announcement of Maritime 2015, the UK Government’s first ever long-term strategy to support and grow the sector. We’ll be working with the trade and our partners to help deliver the exiting opportunities for the sea angling sector. Find more details here Sandeel Ban Binned Last month we reported on an amendment to the Fisheries Bill that could ban anglers and bait companies from fishing for sandeels. Working with Ammo Baits we’ve successfully helped to get the amendment rejected. The Fisheries Minister, George Eustice, confirmed, that the government recognises the importance of ensuring sandeel stocks are sustainably managed to the benefit of both business that rely on them and the health of the wider marine ecosystem. Crab Tiling Consultation Do you have, or use, crab tiles in the Devon & Severn IFCA district? Damian Dixon was setting up on the rocks at Howick when he accidentally entered the sea. He was rescued by the RNLI but tragically he passed away later that day. Any donations will be gratefully received by the Amble Sea Angling Club. Our deepest condolences go to Damian’s family and friends. Click here for more information Sea Angler Receives Volunteer Excellence Award Angling Trust member, Leon Roskilly, has been awarded the Angling Trust’s Volunteer Excellence Award in recognition of his contribution to sea angling over many decades. Among his many contributions Leon has sat on the Angling Trust’s Marine Conservation & Access committee, the Kent & Essex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority as well as starting the Sea Anglers Conservation Network and representing both the NFSA and BASS. Go the members’ area of the Angling Trust website to access your discount code. 2019 Kicks Off With Wyvern Region Shore Open The South West’s first major event in 2019 attracted 158 anglers to the South Hams to fish the annual Angling Trust Wyvern Open Festival. The winner was Ben Bradstock (Honiton SAC) who recorded a specimen whiting of 1.98lb & a lesser spotted dogfish of 1.87lb. It was Ben’s second year in a row winning the Open. Tight At The Top In The Species Hunt As 2018 drew to a close, the leader board for the Species Hunt competition was tighter than the eye on a size 22, with Ollie Mears and Martin Avons sharing the top spot with 58 points each. The December Specimen Winner was Jason Warne with a superb small-eyed ray weighing 6lb 4oz caught from the Isle of Wight. Jason fished a pulley dropper rig with sandeel for bait.
