I haven't been cod fishing in winter for years, I remember we used to catch quite a lot of big one as by catch.

Is it still the case, or are they mainly small congers now?

Like anything it depends where you fish. The ones we had in the Solent were quite small. The further offshore, the bigger they seem to get in my experience.

Not off shore, usual marks around the car park.

Used to catch Congers 30+, some upto 50 lbs.

Been told by various skippers the inshore marks are full of small/very small congers.

South of the Needles the size does improve. The solent congers were underwhelming.
