Manic Moore
as the 4lb club mullet record is probably a thick lipped, Can I claim the 2lb14oz thin lipped I caught this evening in Christchurch Harbour as the clubs thin lipped record. I was on my own but I will check my scales for accuracy Regards Gordon
Maverick Martin
Gordon Check you scales, make any adjustments and record your fish with Charlie Martin
JIMBOB
Gordon there have been quite a few big thin lips booked in in the last couple of years ive had them to 4lb 2oz and loads of 3's, there defintly thins because there caught on a spinner Ive asked your question before,I think the record for thicks/thins is the same because the specimen sizes for wessex are just classed as mullet. hope this helps. Sam
yeah but if we starting bringing all the different types of fish into it it will start turning the book into a record of mini species it will be blennies and gobies next. sam
Manic Moore
I think you need to come out and catch a few mullet young man. They out fight and have more staminer lb for lb than any other uk fish. My 7lb thick lipped took over 15 minutes to get in the net on 5lb hook length. My point is they are as different as a blond ray is to a small eyed ray
Swainiac
Sam, its not about blenny snatching at all, its about the target species, and both mullet and wrasse have potential for well over 100% in our comps, as you yourself saw on our recent trip out onto the patch that evening, you can target cuckoo wrasse by simply adjusting the colour of attractor beads, and hook bait, and bag a 100% specimen quite readily. Yes, i agree that mini species are not really for our comps, but only because fish identification comes into play, not skill in catching, a species is a species in my book, as it is in all EFSA and NFSA comps....its horses for courses, and that course isnt for our club. I will raise the issue at the next meeting, and see what the floor says, as fish ident on mullet and wrasse is fairly easy, even for a beginner like me Crack on Gordy....catch those mullet maaaaaaaaaan! JIMBOB
On the fish Id subject, Rays and wrasse are easy, but mullet? thins and thicks look very very alike ,I would struggle to ID a big thin from a small thick, except from method of capture. also, How could you judge a specimen size for comps when wessex provide only the one? Just some points from when it was discussed last time.
