Weds Afternoon Session

James wanted to have a crack around the back of the island yesterday as he was interguied after our trip on Sunday.

We launched at 12.00 and headed out into the afternoon sun....as we readed the run a thick blanket of cold sea mist decended and stayed with us all day - a great example of why you should always carry warmer clothing, even on the best days. Fortunatly I had a fleece in the cabin.

We spent 3 hours trolling the reefs off Freshwater and while it was slow we had 4 hits. James had the first, a nice bass of about 3lb. I then procceded to have 3 hits in a row, which were all lost due to poor angling practise weep.gif not having the drag set correctly.

We then decided to hit the Bridge for the last hour and picked up a few more fresh baits. Third drift and I though I was snagged in the rock, but then it moved! ohmy.gif A decent bass was hooked for sure and a fantastic fight ensued - short lived though as the hook pulled out! Fish - 4 Me - 0!!

Last drift of the day, right at the end of the reef and I hooked up again - phew! Like peas in a pod, another bass about 3lb.

Eager to get back out their again now, learning all the time about these new marks.

Adam, are you using multipliers or fixed spools? Also, circles still? You shouldnt be missing these bass, as they are ferocious in their feeding habits. Our Police trip off the back was fairly pants, no bass, a few Ray, conger and other small stuff. I havent heard of any substantial catches in the past couple of weeks.

The Warrior with no names went out yesterday bassing.

He first tried just off hurst castle, but there was a queue of 1/2 a dozon boats forming, so he went off to Atherfield round the back of the island. He caught 15 bass, biggest 7 1/2lb. It was caught on a pirk to feathers. Some were caught on mackerals and rapala lures(?).

Jack,

We seem to either -

1. Lip hook (top and exit through nostril) with a single large gape strong hook

2. As for 1 but with a fixed pennel and the lower hook is hooked through the flank of the fish (and kept well loose ie it's not holding the mackerel to your line)

3. Pike rig of pennel trebles as for 2

I notice from some fishing programmes that in America they hook the livebaits through the back just in front of the dorsal fin with a single hook when targetting fish who swallow the livebaits whole - I haven't tried that here.

pennel with the top hook tied in position using the same metod as if the hook were spade end , hook this through the bottom lip and back out the nose to keep the mouth from opening to much the lower hook is loosely nicked in the skin near the anal fin also works on large launce

works for me
