Wedger
Can any of you chaps tell me what batteries are most appropriate for 'Otter'. Seems the two I have are bit 5hag*"d out. we'll need the cracking power for a 130 TD Volvo. There's quite good space available and have 1/2/ and both switching. Anyone using solar panel trickle chargers? Are they of any worth? COST? Just a word on keeping you batteries topped up for the outboard user. Dispite never having real problems starting my Mariner 60 2 stroke, there were times when the battery was a bit low, but still she fired up well, and by the time we'd run through the harbour and to the mark we had full charge. WRONG MOVE Suddenly had a failure on all three pots this last spring as posted ealier. Finally had her fixed................ Diagnosis. Starting on low battery caused high alternator output when running. Result. Cooked stator................

Adam F
Trev, Have a search around this site - plenty has been written about batteries already, and im 100% confident you will find your answer. If it were me I would go for a pair of 110 AH batteries wired through your switch - I think that would give you plenty. Adam
sean
I found Merlin in Poole very helpful - www.merlinequipment.com
Newboy
As Adam said, the subject been covered in details before but in short to do it cheaply, go and get an auto battery for starting and a leisure battery for the running gears, all for around

john c
I have 2 batteries from Halfords. They are the deep cycle units designed for caravans etc, "leisure Batteries" I think they are known as. My 85hp 5 cylinder diesel starts on the button. ANNNND !!! they have a 2 year guarantee. So after 18 months or so of hard cranking, if they get a bit tired, Halfords will swap them over. They didn't ask if they were used on a boat and I don't think there is anything to stop you for this guarantee. Regards John C
duncan
John I tend to agree that they would be hard pushed to be able to confirm that you had been using the leisure batteries for cranking but they might just! Generally even a quite small dedicated starter battery will have the CCA you need to start and, if it's only used for that andkept topped up will last a long time - equally if the leisure batteries are only used as designed they will give many years. Having you leisure services battery available for starting in the event of a problem is another thing, and recommended.

toerag
I have a pair of exide maxxima (I think) batteries in my MI (150 volvo) on one of theose rotary changeover/combination switches. I can easily crank it on one of them in the depths of winter when the oil's cold & thick. However, I also have a Jabsco waterpuppy running my baitwells which will flatten the battery to ~11.5 volts in 3 long drifts at the schole bank, which is not enough to crank the engine. At this point I have to bring the other battery into play to crank it then revert back to the 'flat' one to recharge it over a drift or 2. I also have my 2 sounders, plotter & radio running all the time, and the radar depending on weather.
