jack
Andy and I set out from Cobbs on Sunday with high hopes for a good day .Strong tides, good weather, fair forecast. We would have liked to have motored down to Portland to link up with "the Golden Boys" but felt it would not make good sense realistically. Any way we decided to head out west like the cowboys of old.A first stop at Peverill drifting with shad and redgill, was pretty useless as the wind and tide seemed about equal, but in opposite directions, resulting in a see-saw kind of drifting. we tried trolling next but nil result . Offshore next, At the 4 mile out ,stage ,heading for a well known wreck,we came to the conclusion, after beating against short steep waves at a reducd speed, that we would have difficulty standing up,let alone fishing when we arrived. So with descretion the better part of valour we headed back in to Anvil Point area,There was little tide here but the sea was still rough enough for " one hand for the rail" fishing,All under a tropical sun !.We then moved down to St,Aldhems ledge where the tide was screaming through. We used lip hooked joey's here.one of us hard on the bottom on heavy gear, the other higher in the water on lighter gear. end result after a couple of hours 1 dogfish.we then moved in under the mile posts, tied to a bouy,[cheaper than loseing anchors] in a screaming tide and bottom fished with fresh baits, and whole joey's for another hour . no bites at all. Moved then to a Ray mark closer to base, and spent the next hour removing unbelievable amounts of loose lettuce;string; and other various weed from our end tackle. At this point the boat began to swing about in a week almost non-existant tide.so we quit !.On our return run toward Poole,we encountered again, beginning at Old harry a very strong ebbing tide which continued all the way to the mooring. What a strange day out ! Even Wallace and Grommit would have been surprised. As Andy said to me crossing the harbour on the way in," Strange day,no fish, but beats the hell out of working on a house roof!!!".......jack
duncan
Phaeton's Sunday tale was remarkably similar.............. having got a fishing pass this weekend I teamed up with Dave. As we left Corall's fuel berth Pal o mine came under the bridge next to us so we waved - but got little response.......... and they headed off as we stopped briefly at Dolphin Haven to thank someone for their hospitality on Friday night. Caught them up at Old Harry and thought we would see them off Peveril catching maccy - but they went inshore obviously after better fayre! drifted Durlston with joeys but no show so moved on to St Alban's - great tide running on the flood, but not good to run all the way into the overfalls at it's peak. Dave had a couple of takes hooking one fish that ran just over 4lb. At this point we discovered that I hadn't put the landing net back on after the little cruise - which proved interesting later on! Anyhow it got handed in and Dave's smile was still there many hours later! As the drift speed was falling to 1.9knots we thought about a run over to join in at Weymouth but decided the conditions weren't going to improve when the ebb started so popped ourselves on the reef just off Chapmans Pool for the last of the flood giving us wind with apparant tide as it's an eddy! Dave managed a thorny, a 2lb 10oz bream and lost a honey monster of some sort (smile slipped briefly). As the tide eased we ran to URAY (our XRAY for undulates!) for the slack and start of the flood - straight into fish with Dave leading the way again with a fish of 12lb and I managed one pushing 14lb (both returned for next time). the run back was a little sloppy but once in the harbor the dual function of the livewell feed as a deck wash proved great and left only a quick splash over with fresh water to complete the job (apart from the screens). great day out in the sun all round
jack
So sorry Duncan, I did see your wave and waved back from in the cabin. If it's any consolation as we rounded the corner and saw you head into Dolphin Haven, Andy remarked to me, "thats a nice boat that, and the chap who owns it is a nice bloke too.!!".so it wasn't all bad. Must have a chat about the localised marks around Durleston some time,if you'r willing,as we just seem to run about like chickens with thier heads chopped off....jack
duncan
alway's happy to give you a few but most have been discussed here! they key 'round West' is time and tide - where alone isn't enough unless you are happy to sit on an area for 12 hours straight! great white
Glad you both had a nice day After getting up at 5.30 to get Sam to the rendevous with Neo and the weymouth trip I spent all day and into the evening at work listening to the Members moaning about lack of wind. As Andy said being afloat yesterday on your own boat chasing a few fish beats the C~~~ out of being at work Charlie
