TomBettle
Got the boat round from Weymouth today and it was lovely out there. Fairly mild and little sea except for around any of the races which were kicking up nicely in the spring tides. With Rich's contacts I felt confident of hitting some double figure Bass on Storm lures in Portland Race around a mark we call "Lights in One". Incidentally this is a very good Conger and Bull Huss mark. Seconds into my first drift, bang, stuck in the bottom and on the light gear and five knots of tide, no chance. The same happened a further four times before I managed one tiddler about 2lb whch promptly went back. Oh well, an enjoyable run round to Poole and hopefully a few days practise around here over the next week or so. Tom
Swainiac
Hi Tom..didnt see this post and have written elsewhere.......afterw e spoke I rang Josh Symonds, he was actually out at lights in one, and was taking fish, although he did start life as crew, and a hand on a Bass boat, so he knows the score. He was taking fish every drift. That mark can be snaggy, but keep the rig shorter with stormies, and try and just touch bottom.....ooer missus. Last time I fished it, again with Josh, I fished live macky on 8 - 10 ft trace, with a V small weight on....well behind the boat, snagging the best fish of the day, in two drifts...if theyre there they bite..if not they can be a bugger to locate. They should be there untill maybe second week in Dec, although we are due a cold snap as from today, which will have an effect on the water temp. Hopefully you got in touch with BB, and he gave you some good advice....he's a star, although his dress sense can be a little flamboyant when fishing Rich

I think I know what I was doing wrong, but I need to get out with one of the experts for some guidance as it is soooooo frustrating. Adam F
Tom, 1.) Fish the Portland rig as a start - superb when fishing snagging ground on a fast drift - plus doesnt tangle even with a live bait. 2.) As Rich says keep the trace short when using Shads, as they are weighted the fall quickly. 3.) A decent braid helps bit detection and also to 'feel' the bottom - yes it doesn take lots of practise, but after a while you learn to just bump the reef and come away leaving it just long enough for mr bass! 3.) Make your own leads - its lots cheaper! - I reckon I have donated at least 30lb of lead to the needles reef this year! 4.) A long rof with a soft tip and plenty of backbone is a good help for the reasons above. Finally - if you fancy a trip before xmas (on BW or yours) let me know - work is a little hectic at the mo, but I can always find the odd day! Newboy
I was out on the race today with Cara Cara, I personally didn't do too well, just 1 bass about 3 1/2, a cod 8lb 1/2 and a pollock 2 1/2 lb. Didn't see your boat, but then again there was lots of boats about. I lost most of my lead there on Sunday, today I'm prepared and lost only 3 . P.S if anyone ever go on Pat's boat, ask him to show you the photo of one of his angle with a 6/0 hook thru his tongue.....
