TomBettle
Well Billy no mates here was out again today all on his lonesome. Much more fun today drifting through the channel with a shrimp rig on getting stacks of Herring and gazillions of tiny Bass. Everything went back except half a dozen Herring which is breakfast for the next couple of days. Anchored at Baiter for a while, not a sausage. Same again apart from tiny weeny Bass taking worm on the float. Tom
alun j.
Hi Tom, Well done on being able to get out on what seemed to improve into a lovely day [looking out the window from work]. How big are the herring? I've tried several times for them and never succeeded! Were you inside the harbour......... and the 'channel', the main shipping channel, e.g. around the Aunt Betty buoy ?? Herring would be a change from bass for dinner !! Cheers, Alun.

plaicemat
I'm assuming its a shrimp hokkai style type thingy....rig. Also intrigued to know which channel and inside or outside of harbour. Terry B.
Maverick Martin
Guys A shrimp rig is either a very small hockeye rig or tiny feather type lures. You can catch herring usually in the main shipping channel but could be anywhere in it. A good place to start is around Aunt Betty and work your way down the channel until you find them. Swainiac
Mikey, my comp rig for Herring consists of a cut down string of "Sabiki" glo hauge rigs, on a size 4 hook to 7lb snood, and 12lb body, PM your addy, and I'll post you a full one, or cut one down and you have three rigs for WHEN, not if the rig snaps. They arent indestructabubble, so be mindfull of washing them out in fresh water, and I roll mine onto a section of pipe lagging, slipping the hooks into the soft material for safety. I also use a bright red or bright yellow 4-5oz ball weight for the dropper, it really works........there goes my species hunt secret!!!!!! I get my rigs from the states at less than ten bob each, over here you can buy them at WAC, or I think Gerrys does Sabikis too. I think Ive got a dozen or so sets left, each consisting of ten hooks on each string, so thats three rigs per pkt. I'll even throw in postage for free Rich
TomBettle
Hi Guys Yep, tiny hokai lures, 3 oz lead and very gently work them along the bottom. On the fish finder, great clouds were showing up within a few feet of the bottom (although I only ever hooked one at a time). I was drifting the last of the flood in the main harbour channel from bouy 44 down and then on the start of the ebb from bouy 48 up. Most of the herring were typical medium mackeral size, but I had one big one which I didn't even think about until I got home and then checked the NFSA record was 1lb 1oz. I gutted the fish on the boat earlier, but out of interest I weighed the big one on the kitchen scales and it was a tiny bit short of 15oz. Blimey! Could have been a record... It tasted nice for tea anyway! Tom
duncan
Ah well - and there is no club record for herring, or even a specimin weight listed in the comp rules pack for the open , so I guess it's not an eligible species for that event....... Newboy
You've got it in one, not on specimen sheet, and it won't count, Charlie confirmed it a few weeks back.
Maverick Martin
Correct if they aint on the wessex specimen list they won't count in the open comp as we have no reference point but there is nothing to say you cannot claim a club record with a herring.
