TomBettle
30 gallons is a HUUUUUGGGGGGE Tank Check out the tek tank website. All on there. No plumbing or fiddling around, various sizes, plug in the pump and off you go, http://www.tek-tanks.com/standard/standard_bait.html
Paul J
I knew someone was going too say that and your probably not wrong. What size is realistic to keep xxxx amount of mackeral?. i know its a compromise over space , weight and capacity to keep the fish alive. i do want to be able to keep the fish healthy and have room for up to 18in in diameter. you don't fill up the barrell so the capacity has to be considered in usable galllons Perhaps those with bait wells can advise? Cheers Paul
Adam F
The Blue bins are 60 litres, and are the optimum size IMO - not too large to upset weight distribution on a 16'+ boat and big enough for up to 20 macky or a 100 odd eels. Smaller than this really restricts your capacity and youll find yourself having to keep popping off to feather some more bait. Any larger is cumbersome and heavy. The 60 ltr also is a good seat height.
TomBettle
I am completely with Adam here. On a 16 foot boat you want to keep weight as minimal as possible. 30 gallons would be somewhere in the region of 130Kg. Sat at the back, front, side, wherever this would upset the balance of the boat comsiderably. 60 litres is about 12.5ish gallons and spot on for a boat that size. I carry a 20 gallon Tek Tank "Keep Alive" baitwell and that is way big enough on my boat which has 23 foot hull length. Tom

blueboatdriver
Some of them looked a bit like a toilet. I especially liked hte glow in the dark version; ideal for when you're trying to sneak in after one too many and don't want to put the light on. TomBettle
Yep, admittedly they are very pricey, but when kitted out Quest II I didn't know where to get the blue barrels and I also wanted something that would look smart on the boat and not "home made". But
AlderneyBassman
Interesting that you put the inlet at the top. I made my livewell from one of the blue barrels (found it outside the Indian with dregs of mango chutney in)! But I put the inlet at the bottom and its very slow to fill and if I turn the pump off it refuses to work when I turn it on again. I thought it was due to an airlock but maybe its 'cos of the head of water its pumping against. Why didn't I find this site last year
Wedger
Barrel selection. Largest is 200 litres. These can be cut down and lid made. Wider but keeps centre of gravity low . (and pump head pressure down for bottom entry ) The choice is all about safe load distribution, overall weight and deck space in the first instance. Then look at carrying capacity. I posted one of the small ones I converted for the Wilson 17 end of last summer I think. Have a search. Barrels Wedger

Adam F
Tis what all the charter boys use - its only thin sheet SS, so not too heavy at all. I personally have never had the need for one - dont get sandeels very often, and when I do they go within a few hours!

alankirby
marine containers try solent plastics but not sure of price for them. manor house avenue, southampton. www.solentplastics.co.uk Looks like a really useful firm. Like the look of of some of the round containers and i also see the do square tanks, all with lids available. Look like they would make good live bait tanks. Will have to find out some prices and what the delivery cost would be. Alan
