Afishionado
I am going out tomorrow from Poole which will be the first time for three weeks. So I have no idea where or even if the mackerel are shoaling in the Poole /Swanage area. Any clues anybody? Secondly Whitehouse grounds? What do you recon. Or is it best to go east and fish the Dolphin banks? Any sugestions more than welcome please. Either PM me or here. Oh and Dave (Codfather) I hear you want a chat. Your wish is my command Oh Glorious One Mad Mike
Adam F
Mike, Macky are plentiful at the mo - usual spots. Would say that the whitehouse grounds may fish better than the dolphin banks from previous experiance - but why not keep some of the macky alive and drift peveril ledge for a big spikey??!! Mike Fox
Might be a bit whumpity out there Mike...forecasting stiff Easterlies! Mike
Adam F
Mike F is right - 4/5 NNE occasionally 6 on exposed headlands tis the metoffice f/cast. If you do get out - yes Mike, as close to the bottom as you dare, hence the rotton bottom. Good luck!
Afishionado
BUMMER! Last time I looked the forcast (earlier in the week) said 5 to 10mph NE. Sod it there is nowhere with sheltered water on an Easterly round our neck of the woods is there. It'll come whistling down the solent and realy whizz round our headlands. Begger! Do carp take rag worm? Looks like Poole Harbour for me then! Mad Mike

Afishionado
Well we went out and a look to see what it was like. Sailing boats all had reefs in and were leaning hardso we decided to fish the harbour. Whilst wallowing on the edge of the Swash by Shell bay I decided to tackle up before we went back in to the first drift down Brownsea roads. Mark my co owner asked if I minded him dropping a worm down whilst I tied knots and swallowed swivles. "Go for it mate but I don't think there's a lot here we're a bit close in to the shore". Two minutes later his rod bucked over and his reel screeched as about 50 yds of line was stripped of and he was into a hard fighting fish. It turned out to be a beautiful bass about 6lb which was admired and put back. Although we tried several more drifts nothing else came from there. We beetled off to drift round Brownsea and had several more checker sized fish and wrass. When the tide slackened we anchored up over a patch I have caught on before and had a succession of huge wrass (3 to 5lb) and a bloody good bream of about 2.5lb and some smaller stripy black bream. Adam F
Nice one Mike, seems you managed the best of a poor day weather wise, and some nice fish to boot!
Mike Fox
Well done Mike! Sounds like you had a good one after all. We used to anchor on the edge of Shell Bay during mid-week trips (quieter then), and cast into the channel. Had small bass to a couple of pounds on worm there, but nothing of 6lb! We had a couple of nice plaice there too, on manky dead worms. We tried again and again with fresh wrigglers without luck, which makes me wonder if they hunt by smell. Cracking bream too for the harbour! If it's the same wrasse hole I use, I'm staggered, as I have never had a quality black bream in the harbour before (mind, we had a nice gilthead once...). Good to hear the fish do still feed in the Easterlies! Mike
