Bob F
Here's the Portland Rig which is used whilst drifting for Bass. This can be fished with Wrag Worm or Sandeel baits. And also with live Mackerel if you increase the hook size. BF
TomBettle
I personally never use the crimps and simply have the hook length swivel running free. I find it gives the bait more movement.
Bob F
Yes, agreed when using live mackerel, but for worm or sandeel baits I prefer to keep the flowing trace further up the line to reduce the chance of snagging the hook. Adam F
The use of crimps completely ruins the whole principle of the rig IMO. The beads also add little purpose - they dont have to buffer anything, so just add more cost, bulk and time to the rig. Great diagram though bob. To me the rig should be quick, cheap and simple to tie.

BF Lose the crimps, just make the middle bit shorter and lengthen the rotten bottom.

Les L.
one more flavour I also use 3 swivels but top swivel slides up and down main line with about 4 inches of rotton bottom attached to weight.Second swivel stops first swivel and third swivel splits a flowing trace Les

Les L.
Quite possibly Tom, not well up on all the various names. It was the rig we used on the commercial boat i worked on a few years ago. Les
Bob F
Is this what you mean, Les? BF
Newboy
But it means the live bait can swim all the way from the bottom to the surface, great if fish are everywhere, bad if the fish are hard on the bottom.
Les L.
Bob,Kam, Nonono, I described it badly.Attached to the sliding top swivel is a 4 inch rotton bottom and the weight. So its basically a ledger rig with a rotton bottom so that in a bottom snag you loose the weight and can retie quickly. No beads or crimps, rig is as simple as possible so that if its all lost at the end of a drift it can be retied in the 2 or 3 minutes it takes to motor up to the start of the next drift. TBH dont know why the trace is split with a swivel given the simplicity idea - I ve tried it without but the but doesnt fish as well. Newboy
So where we have hook, you have weigh and where we have weigh you have hook, is that right?
