Adam F Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Well, will we ever get a comp against the guys from Burnham?? After having the last two comps cancelled, the long range is giving it nasty again this weekend - stong winds from the south... Fingers crossed for a change.,.. Quote
britboard Posted September 18, 2006 Report Posted September 18, 2006 Oh bugger! Does that mean that we win by default All fingers and other bits crossed Simon L Quote

alun j. Posted September 19, 2006 Report Posted September 19, 2006 Well done finger-crossers.......... looks like we might have a calm[ish] day if the current forecast holds. Simon......are we targetting the bass again ?? Adam ........ can you post a few tips for us Portland Novices ? Alun. Quote
Adam F Posted September 19, 2006 Author Report Posted September 19, 2006 Yes, a window has appeared!! As for tactics on the day - I'm a little unsure until I get down there. The tides will big springs so the overfalls on the race will be sizeable even if the wind is low - in this instance smaller boats or more unsure skippers may want to give this a miss - 5 knots + of tide, plus 10 feet or more standing water can be pretty daunting and dangerous. On the slack the banks to the east of the Shambles will be worth a look, as will the Lulworth banks. If anyone wants inshore wreck numbers I will give them out on the morning. The reefs inshore around the Bill will produce Wrasse, and the mussel beds will still have Bream. If you do fish the race - live macky on a Portland rig, 6-12oz of lead will be the tactics. Anything else? Quote
Swainiac Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Mark and I will have a tank of eels. The reefs also hold bullies, pollack, and smaller rays. Speciman Gars are being taken also. Will report back again tonight, after consulting BB, currently competing in the YYS Rich Quote
Swainiac Posted September 20, 2006 Report Posted September 20, 2006 Guys, I will try and get a load of eels, but can't promise. Martin and Alun have pm'd me, and they have first shout if we have spare. If the tide run exceeds three knts this weekend, use stormies, they work very well in this speed of tide. We took plenty of bass and cod last week in smaller tides, so it is possible. Stomy sandeels, the larger ones, not minis, will also work down there. You can also drift the bank, and collect Launce on mini rigs, but cut them down to two or three hooks, and use a silver attractor on the bottom as weight, that will give you plenty of launce fairly hooked in the mouth, not belly hooked. Sorry I cant be more helpfull on the eel front. Rich Quote
Paul D Posted September 21, 2006 Report Posted September 21, 2006 Interesting that this spate of bad weather is down to the remnants of a hurricane. Hurricane Gordon ! I knew I shouldn't have crushed his "lucky" hat in the back of my car Quote

Paul D Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I am going to leave it until Saturday to make decision whether to go or not go. It's a long way to go to be sat inshore in the rain. Quote
Coddy Posted September 22, 2006 Report Posted September 22, 2006 I must admit I am not keen to sit all day in the rain! Going for a look see on Saturday anyway. Coddy Quote
