Lazy Baits

Hi Bob

Interesting topic about lug worm.

Before I moved down to Poole, I used to fish on the East coast and we used nothing but lug and only rag if we had too.

I have also fished Dungerness from the beach and it has always been regarded as the No1 bait.

The cod and coddling loved it and it gave off lovely juices and sent but so far I have only found frozen lug.

I assume that there are not any lug beds around this area so the fish are not used to tasting it.

There are lug beds here at Sandbanks and other more remote locations but it is much harder to come across than ragworm. Thats probably the only reason that rag is more popular in this area. The lug beds I know of is blow lug which I think is not as attractive as the black lug we read about. When I used to beach fish regularly I preffered lug but rarely used it as shops and most bait diggers didnt stock lug.

I havent tried preserved or look alike worm baits but would assume if the scent is good that it would work.

If you do try some let us know what its like Bob.

dry.gifdry.gif Ok chaps, test results so far. ISAC comp on the beach was cancelled after 80 mins due to excessive weed pulling the rods over, no lazy lug used. Sunday at the WAS comp. Changed to a rover due to adverse weather conditions, most went wrassing at Cheyne, no lazy lug used. Monday night at the kiddies comp on the Pleasure Pier. Prior to the comp starting I popped a float out to see if any Gar were in evidence, plenty of small pollack and bream on gar strip. Ant Buick turned up with some of the fabled Lazy Lug, so I baited my float rig with a small worm. Smells like formaldehyde, but caught two small pollack and a bream in 5 minutes. Then set up a 3 hook comp rig and baited them all with lazy lug. Bites straight away and caught wrasse, pollack and pout. Then baited bottom hook with lug and other two with rag, pout on bottom hook. Middle hook with lug next drop, double shot of pout, bottom hook and middle hook.

Conclusion: It certainly works for the tiddlers on the pier. Whether it works for lager fish I dont know but I now have a tub to try from the boat. I am keeping an open mind at the moment. I will report when completed. BB cool.gif
