Bob F
I intend to give the artificles a good try this year, mostly on the drift rather than constantly casting and retrieving. Is there an optimum drift speed for Shads and Rapala's? I think I read somewhere that you need at least 3knts for Shads in order for their action to work properly. For Repala's you need less speed to get the action working, so 1-2knts should be fine??? Anyone had any success in the inshore waters using artificles on the drift? Paul J
Bob, I think that storm shads work at much slower speeds than that. hang one over the side and you'll see it does not take much to get the tail moving.
munterhunter
Heard of some bass to 4lb falling to shads in the harbour last year. We use a diving vane and feathers /lures for mackerel in the summer. Picked up mackerel and schoolies on a chug plug last year drifting hook sands. boybilly
Bob, Its jellies mate that need the drift speed. Shads and Rapalas can be useda lot slower, however , sometimes you need to realy crank to get a bite. Depends on those fickle little fisheees mate. Bob F
Thanks chaps. Last year I saw a big silver fish jump clear out of the water near Poole Patch. I was convinced that it looked like a double figure bass, but I've never heard of bass jumping. Have you? I've seen it twice now. I suppose it could've been a Sea Trout. Anyway, since then I've been itching to try a few lures. Bob F.
Paul D
Bob, Seen plenty of mullet jumping in XChurch harbour ( as well as the odd sea trout ), so could be mullet ?
Bob F
Maybe, but this was a big fish, almost certainly double figures. My daughter saw it first and then it jumped a second time.
Bob F
Just read an article in TSF by Jim O'Donnell, skipper of Tiburon in Plymouth, and he recommends that Wild-Eye and Storm Shads are best used when the drift speed is in excess of 3 knts. Paul J
Still to try this so it's only theory But i reckon a slow drift with the shad on the bottom (shallowish water) with a long sweep of the rod at intervals would give them a nice action. They fish hook upwards so they should be ideal for nudging along the bottom. I want to try them through the enterance with a ball wieght and a long trace. Another thing i want to try more of is using a chug plug after dark
boybilly
Paul, Is a chug plug a popper? I would be interested in a dusk session for Bass with these. I can return the favour about October when the big Bass run shallow in Portland harbour. BB

Maverick Martin
Hi Mark Yes we caught fish on Storm lures on Tiger Lilly, I for one caught the biggest pollock on Tiger Lilly at around 12lb on the first wreck we visited. Several pollock and pout were caught using them. I will definately be giving them a real go on Maverick Martin
