Maverick Martin
and that's then end of the catch report from the Maverick crew well not quite Dean and I left Cobbs quay at around 8am. The sea was as flat as the kitchen table....a beautiful morning. Said good morning to Mike Fox and family who were fishing off Brownsea Castle, strange to see people fishing from a sailing boat. Then off we go out of the harbour and looked out to sea. Uuuummmm it looked a little black about 5 miles off, looks like were going to get wet says Dean. We cruise on out at 22 - 24 knots, the nearer we get to our chosen mark the better it looks, by the time we arrived the clouds had all but disappeared. The day then proceeded to get better as it went on in fact it was the best day I have had afloat for a few months. Now on to the fishing. Dropped our baits in our first chosen mark and got rewarded with doggy after doggy, soon got fed up with that and moved out to another of our winter marks. Well it fished slowly but we ended up with Bass to 4lb, Bream to 2.5lb, Conger straps, Pout, Blonde ray 18.5lb Bullhuss 8lb 12oz and more dogs All in all a wonderful day afloat with some fish thrown in to amuse us. How did you do? Martin
JIMBOB
Sounds like a super day afloat to me Martin, was thinking of you guys out there today....what an absolute cracker of a day for october! great day for me at work James
Manic Moore
Sounds similar to Alun and I. We left Mudeford about 7.30 and went to xray to and got 1 or 2 doggies, moved onto the clan where we met Paul J and although we maxed our doggies that was about the limit so after an hour sped out to a bigger wreck a few miles further out and just as well. First drift, double hook up, 6lb bass on large hock eyes and a 7lber to me on a shad, after that only pout so we anchored up and over the next few hours managed scad, whiting, poor cod, tope, another cracking bass to Alun of 8lb 6oz and about 20 stone of lsds. A busy and lovely day in the sun, good company with AJ and Entiser continues to pur along. Isn't fishing just great

carl/overdraft
Well what a fantastic day to be afloat, the first day of winter. Headed out from Poole at about 8 15 drpped our first bait about 9 30. Infested with lsd. at first but then managed to land a few Whiting along with 2 Bass a Red Gurnard and then it finally happened after a long time waiting and trying a Cod of 14lb 12oz. sorry if i mislead anyone over the airwves but i must really learn to read the scales when i get excited. all in all a really enjoyable day. Paul D
Carl, I was beginning to think I had gone mad as I was sure I heard you say it was heavier. Now quite relieved Still a very nice fish and the first to be recorded in the new database.
Coddy
Hi all launched Sammy about 8.30 and headed out to X-ray hole from Poole. Dropped the pick and started to catch doggies. Neo gave me a call and said he was near by and they were into doggies as well and did I fancy a move? I got the anchor up and headed South about a couple of miles where a group of boats were fishing, found a spot and down went the anchor again. Soon into doggies (again) then got a nice sizable whitting then more doggies. A while later Paul then said he was off again going West so I lifted the pick again and went West as well. Found Paul and anchored near by. Into doggies again but then had a nice 1.5lb Red gurnard, my first this year. Went dead for a while and Paul went back to Christchurch so I went over to the swash, was winding in and had a bite but it dropped off so no idea what it was. Cleaned the boat up and put the rods away and headed back in. This was my first 'fishing' trip alone on the boat so had to do everything which made life interesting to say the least. Just finished packing the boat up ready to leave when the battery on the car went dead! Had to wait for the RAC to give me a jump start. Need to find a new battery for the car now! Bob F
Hi Coddy, I think that's a Tub Gurnard and not a Red. The Red's are really red, the tub's are a browny red. BF
Paul D
Dave, E-Mail in a catch report ( using the button at the top of the websire here ) for the gurnard as it equals the existing club record.
Coddy
It was very red when I brought it in, took a while to get a photo and when it went back it took quite a while to recover. It had loverly blue lines to the wings leading edges. You can just about see it in the photo. Paul J
I thought Tubs were much browener and uglier- my monies on a red PJ
Bob F
Yes, definitely a Tub (a juvenile). Red's don't have the blue tips to the ends of the pectoral fins. BF Edited October 29, 2006 by Bob F
Bob F
Here's a Red.
Bob F
And here's a Tub. Note the blue tips to the fins.
Paul D
Was just studying the fishbase details and apparently the reds have a smooth lateral line as well, whereas the tub gurnard has a raised lateral line. From the picture it does appear raised. FishID
Coddy
I took another photo but looking at the pictures available it does seem to be a Tub. Coddy
great white
I had a simular problem with the current record fish and here is the photo of it I believe that Dave's may be a small TUB But out of interest to eveyone, I received a note from a Member reporting a Red of 1lb 12 oz, I will try and check with the Member concerned ref the RED?TUB question as its a hard one before confirmation that I now hold 1 less Club record. I hope I do as I like to see them broken and the sizes grow I thought a few more may go by now, while my crew and I are resting Charlie
Coddy
Hi Charlie I am getting used to looking at Gurnards now and I would say that you have a Red in your hands by the look of the top fins, can't see the wings to see if they had any coloured edges to them. duncan
if we are voting then the one in Charlies post is a Red and the other a Tub. glad your crew are resting Charlie - have feeling you are planning a busy year next year and I expect to see at least 4 club records get adjusted up by your efforts in 2007. Bob F
Yes, I'd agree with that. Charlie's is a red. BF
