Phaeton will be heading out (weather permitting) again for this Poole event, with Dave and PaulJ (who's still celebrating his victory in last years event!)

Any other club boats aiming to enter ?

Posted

Mike,

Weather willing I will be out, although considering where to launch from etc. ( ie. Is there time to launch from Lymington, return boat en-route and then drive to the weigh-in ? )

Great offer Paul, thanks!

Weigh-in ends at 5.30, so really need to be ashore etc for 4p.m. if Lymington - as it's an hour on dry roads with no traffic, and that's without a boat behind.

What do you think?

Gordon,

What was the problem in the end and how much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking?

The problem was caused by corrosion of the sump casing which compromised the gasket allowing water to track through into the oil. Simple fault, but needed a major strip down to fix it and at the moment I

I have blagged the day off for the comp, so will be out on Nipper, with me old mate mark. Best stock up on breakfast goodies for the duration. Squid and cuttle laced with black lug will be the baits I expect.

Mike,

Sounds good to me ( I am tempted to say if we get a fish then we return earlier just to be sure to make the weigh in ). Can you PM me your phone number and can arrange the finer details.

cheers Paul

I am unable to accept offers of a trip this year, Sams gutted as He had 3 offers.

I am afraid it was thanks but no thanks this time.

You will be pleased to know a few cod are showing from Poole

I hear that two 30+ lunkers were landed this week on Charter boats

Merry Christmas

Dare I say it, forecast looks ok, 6mph wind, nil precipitation, slight seas, good vis, but a falling barometer. Biggish tide?? I think I'll have to make up some heavier leads!

Mark, have you squid in the freezer?? I have some cuttle and macky.

love your forecaster m8 - mine unfortunately suggests a SSW 3, possibly bottom of 4.

coming of the back of lighter Easterlies there shold be little or no swell however.............

2 club members got amongst the prizes, unfortunately, I caught my cod a week too early sad.gif

Gordon Holt on Fugazi and Mark Bessant on Nipper had cod which with only 9 fish weighed in put them amongst the prizes on offer, so an Abu Elite for Mark Bessant and an Abu 7000 for Gordon were well worth fishing for.

( Apologies to anyone else who may have been a winning club member that I havent recognised ).

Rich managed to spawn a raffle prize of a fishing Rod which he kinfly gave to Dave who had been fishing with Duncan.

I managed to blank sad.gif and Mike caught a solitary dogfish.

Neo's trip started off at Lymington and we headed for the needles "car park" escorted by Nipper. The bridge was "interesting" and dropped anchor on the mark we had waves of around 6 foot ( Nipper anchored nerby kept disappearing ).

Fished the start of the flood and nothing showing - wind picked up, so decided to head for the shelter of the solent. 26 knots cruise through the Solent and off to "mark2" where agter a while we met up with Gastronaught, Nipper and Fugazi.

4 attempts to hold anchor, then re-anchored alongside Fugazi where Gordon hauled in a codling almost as soon as we had stopped.

Left at 3:20 and retrieved boat, off to home to drop off boat and then a dash to the weigh-in to see if we could have made it ( and we would have ).

Excellent spread of prizes available and well worth fishing for ( with unclaimed prizes being raffled off ). Congratulations to Andy Robbins and Poole Sea Angling Centre for a superbly run competition.

Gastronaught and crew knew what to do in the conditions and turned left out of Lymington at the outset.

Unfortunately we couldn't contact the , widely spaced fish despite a selection of cod-proven baits.

All I could tempt were pout ofd various size ......... and had to laugh seeing a 6" fish hooked fairly on a 6/0 hook, where even the remains of squid was bigger!

Gordon managed 1 doggie [almost ..... saved unhooking!] and quite a bit of shouting as the two fish caught were from boats in 'spitting distance' from us.

Again, again......I am impressed with Gordon's crewwing skills. Given the slightest problem, this man has it sorted!! Useful suggestions, practical solutions, fearless at hanging over the backend to sort tangles! I must get him a new wooly hat! but am wary of some superstition with hats??

Despite lack of success, I enjoyed my day out [ and the good company] and looks unlikely to get another before back to work, looking at the forecasts. I'll console myself by saying 'I've got plenty of tackle', some will say 'too much'!

Happy New Year to all members,

Alun.
