TOMO As Southbourne are squealing that all their dredged up sand dumped by the council has disapeared, I wonder if the residents of Christchurch have ended up with it? It's a your damned if you do and damned if you don't situation for Christchurch and the water company. At the moment it is (by the standard of Poole) a lightly used charming harbour with an air of the 1950's still about it. No gin palaces and not too many loonies from London screaming round on PWC. However if the entrance and channels were dredged out to take the bigger boats would that benifit all? I think not, the beautiful little haven will be gone to be replaced by another marina like development. Mad Mike
alun j.
It would be an almost impossible task .........akin to building sandcastles between the tidelines. It's the Bar that's the problem.......the shallows beyond the Run. I went for a walk there at LW on Mon. afternoon; with these big Spring tides , you could walk right out beyond the last yellow buoy and see the 'Outer' red buoy splashing about in the shallow surf. The river now cuts a much straighter route to the sea, with a sharp right turn at the second yellow due to the new gravel piled up in front of Avon beach....but it's hardly a 'channel'. just a bit deeper. The whole area is mostly loose gravel and cobbles , with very little sand. Nothing to bind it together, it's quite soft to walk on ..... so must get pushed about by the waves. If a deeper channel was excavated, surely the gravel would slide back in the 'hole' and/or get filled in come the next blow. As for Southbourne losing its' new sand, it hasn't come east! Recent news showed the efforts Christchurch council were doing at Highcliffe to repair the beach near the groynes. Sand washed away had exposed the old wooden beach defenses from the '60s. Alun. Tomo
I have recentley plotted the new mini channel and th Bar and with any sort of swell other than maybe 1 hr either side of high tide you have got no hope . I draw approx 3 ft to the prop.....2ft 6ins with engine trimmed....with aprrox 4ft 6 of water and a 3 ft swell......ouch.......not for the faint hearted... I believe they are the first UK company to introduce these with full CE approval for the UK roads....well worth a call if your after a new trailer.
