IF U GET SOMETHING THAT BIG I WOULD INSIST ON IT GOING BACK AND IF CAUGHT IN THE ACT I WOULD PAY THE FINE OUT OF MY OWN POCKET I THINK ICELANDIC RULES ARE A BIT SILLY WE ARE GOING TO HAVE MINIMUM SIZE ON OUR BOATS

WELL THERE IS NOT A LOT OF DIFFRENCE IN THE FISHING BETWEEN HERE AND NORWAY WE DO GET BIGGER HALIBUT HERE AND THE COD RANGE FROM ABOUT 8 POUNDS UP TO THE MID 30S WITH SOME BIG UNS CHUCKED IN FOR GOOD MEASURE 40LBS + I ALSO THINK WERE ARE A LITTLE CHEAPER HERE

Hi Skippy

I have to say that your general fishery management is brilliant and I applaud how Iceland has managed to get such a top, sustainable fishery.

...I think the key policy is to blow out of teh water any French, Spanish or for that matter "any" otehr trawler other than your own.

Good on you, I think we should adopt a similar policy.

Shame about your keep it all regardless rules, but if your fishery is that good and well managed with it, along with anglers bieng sensibile and knowing when to stop then fair enough (within reason).

I'd be interested in knowing more as I should be fishing Norway sometime soon and a comparison would be good.

Tom

PS: Are you guys still using dirty great pirks or do you lighten up the gear and use shads or small jigs?

hi tom well on our boats we have adopted a minimum size of 5 pounds anything smaller goes back yes we do do light fishing here as well i was doing it not that many weeks ago and i had a fish snap my rod but i now have the boat equipped with conoflex triology 30lb calss boat rods have a great action i use 30 lb line as the rind-gs on the rods can not stand the braid for to long 400grams of lead is used as a norm as it is deep water and in some places strong currents but i have just recived 2 conoflex uptiders that will let me land a big fish on these fantastic light rods will be trying them out in the coming weeks as for comparing to norway we have the same fishing here i do think however that our halibut are a bit bigger cod are about the same as norways with the chance of a 50lb + possible

If you like the conoflex trilogy range, but don't like the rings (they ae cr@p) then contact:

Stan Massey at Alba Rods.

He builds Conoflex rods (sometimes for them).

I think his website is this one.

http://www.alba-rods.co.uk

I will be getting a new custom built with custom butt and rings Trilogy 6lb class in the next few days.

This rod will be my main rod for fishing the channel wrecks for Cod, Pollack and Bass.

If you are drift fishing(?) then you shouldn't need as much as 400grm?

Unless you use mono line you should be able to fish with 210grm in up to about 250 feet and the most 350grm in anything up to 3.5knots of tide and 350 feet of water.

Weight will be even less if you cut the line down to 12lb or 20lb braid.

If you fish on the drift, you can use hardly any weight at all to get down as the boat will drfit at the speed of the tide (the only other effect will be wind which does need considering). In theory, you could use 30grm or 60grm to get down, but it would take so long we tend to use more.

Tom

PS: The cod in the big bin on your website are pretty small ones, but that halibut looks something else. 6lb class won't work for him!

the cod in the bin are averaging 8 pounds the pic does not do it justice are average size of cod here on a drop is about 18 lbs

we do drift but in some places the tide and the wind can be very strong hence 400 grams i do use 8 ounces normaly

or a 200 g pirk i am just waiting for some new stuff to come from fishtek to try out and my own personall reels are loaded with braid i can get away with using 6 ounces sometimes

I think it all depends on wind and tide, when we were in Noeway, we had to use 500g+ pirk (masice thing like a silver banana... ohmy.gif ) when wind was against tide.

Also for anyone who is going to norway, SAS has smarttened up, they weigh your hand luggage, get you to put everything into your hull luggage then charge you an hand and a leg for any excess, and they are pretty tight on any excess weight.

i hate airlines so the way i got around it is kittimg my boats out with gear for those anglers that do not wish do bring there own i use conoflex rods and masterline reels whcih is free of charge for the angler to use i do charge for terminal tackle tho as this is very expensive in iceland and if i import from the uk when it arrives in iceland i have to pay a further 30% vat ontop things like weights and pirks cost the most but i am not a rip off i make them my self and will only charge for the cost of materials not labour

Not seen this problem before - I am on the case ....

Have 20 posts for now !

OK - worked it out. Posts in the "welcome" forum do not increase your post count. Any other area will though.

One problem I personally have with fishing in Iceland is their stance in hunting whales. Elsewhere on this site there is a traumatic video of dolphins being slaughtered. Personally, I cannot see much difference between that and hunting whales.

Skippy

If those Cod on your site are averaging 8lb then my scales are wrong and the fish I weigh on my boat at 15lb are really 30....

Don't get me wrong, they are nice fish, but smaller than 8lb. "Even the big one" the lad is holding up doesn't look to be close to a 20.... maybe 14lb?

You don't know a guy called John Wilson do you?

All the best

Tom

Hi Skippy

Don't take this the wrong way as I am smiling whilst I type (not being agressive, just having a bit of fun debate).

But of the cod in the bin, I would guess that a large portion are under 5lb (your own minimum size?).

I applaud you for the business you run, and envy you as I would love to do it and think that Halibut you have pictured is just fantastic.

Your fishing looks superb too, but most of us are aware that Iceland has wonderful fishing although fish size is more akin to Southern Norway rather than the monsters seen up "North".

..The little bit about John Wilson was a silly joke.

...he is known for his silly laugh, but also he is very well known for (and all fishermen are) exaggerating.

Skippy's last post from the welcome forum which missed the move over

i lol to

here in iceland we have a small fish called capelin they travel from the east of the island to the west on there arrival here the lay there eggs and then die now this is when we get our very big cod that have also come this way to spawn the follow the caplein and have a good meal this is when we have the chance of the big 50lbs +

please look out for sea angler magazine september edition mel russ has done a write up about iceland i how ever have dave barham coming over from boat fishing monthly in april so i will have a feature in there in may or june as for the same level of fishing as the south of norway that is wrong we have this wonderful exclusion zone and we do have a much better and bigger run of cod than them the main species we catch here in iceland are cod halibut haddock and wolf fish and all run into vwery good sizes
