Typical day's fishing ......... unpredictable!!

Lovely sunny start with no wind.....couldn't last !!

......and by the time PJ and me had whizzed down the Swash Channel, a fresh Westerly was getting up........ blowing us across the drifts at about 1 knt with no tide.

No sign of any 'spotties' for us , or the othe drifters............ so tactic 2.....anchor close in to the bank [ and try and repeat last week's success]

First spot , too far away and no action ............ so closer in..........and Bang, Bang!

Not spotty, nor spikey !! ............ but Mr [ and Mrs.]Toothy !!....... a succession of medium sized wrasse provided today's action. We both had 4 or 5 fish each , with PJ topping out, with a fat one of 4 lb. 2 oz.

The wind eventually got the better of us and we retreated into the harbour to try a few [fruitless] drifts in the lee of Brownsea.

So different out of the wind........ so a peaceful last hour, in the shelter and sun, finished the worms with a steady stream of small fish....... pollack, bass and a small flounder.

How can such a relaxing day leave me feeling so tired??

Paul,

Good to have you along.....to point out 'hotspots'!

Don't forget to post your best wrasse in the book.

Interested to see your collection of plugs......pity it was [much] too early to deploy them effectively; let's have a session with them ......one warm evening [June??].

Hi Duncan,

We were in the Swash then, bouncing about, close in behind the Training Bank, and finding it less than comfy, cooking my Gastronaught special bacon sarnies.

And following the food / coffee / pee paradigm.............that's when you get your best bites!! ...... but I wasn't expecting wrasse.

I see the forecasters got it all wrong with the wind again!! Sat. was screaming and today seemed benign.....the reverse of what they had on Fri.!!

Looks like some might be able to enjoy some wonderful, warm Spring sunshine later this week........but not me!

Cheers,

Alun.

Hi Alun

well done to you both for braving the saturday lumpiness, I took the boat out for a pre-maiden launch and made a right hash of bringing her in on the finger pontoon with alot of windage and no throttle, hopefully no-one noticed much blink.gif

Today was a different story - maiden voyage with the familly, plus a garage load of gear, two hyper active kids and the rubber boat.... still it was a beautifully sunny day spent pottering about arround Brownsea roads.

We anchored up and rowed ashore for the last part of the afternoon, and had the whole island to ourselves, just watching the Peacocks and their displays, in the late warm sunshine.

Then it was back to the marina, opened up the throttle for the first time on flat water, and I was very impressed when she topped out at 27knts and 5800 rpm WOT.....Who saids Orkneys are sluggish!!

Next time out with full fishing gear, I promise...

Paul

Hi Paul

I would take care with the kids in the tender because if I recall Bob had the harbourmaster give him hassle ref towing toys!

I know you used the boat as a tender but carrying people whilst towing may be considered as a toy!

Thought a thought wink.gif

OK, thanks...for the advice.. I'll be careful..

I'd probably just claim I was found them floating in the harbour and was rescueing them. We towed them at 4mph, for a few 100 yds, not the ringo style rides you normally witness off the back of a Bayliner in the summer, right in the main channel....

I have searched long and hard but can't find a decent pint on Brownsea, and don't carry the rubber thingy in winter either 'cos it gets in the way on fishing trips, hence we went the other way..............

plenty of water - never less than 4" under my props.......... unsure.gif

as Alun say's Wareham Quay - a great run at this time of year when the trip boats aren't using the lower Quay section and the run to the bottom of the river is at 30knots not 7 (I don't do 10..........)

had the good camera with me in cxase I met up with someone wanting pics........... sad.gif ......... but they were too busy catching wrasse!

Excellent picture Duncan........... reminds me of the type they turn into jigsaw puzzles [ lots of interest and colours]; perhaps one of them might be interested ??

Wow! 4 inches ?....Did you have to check the tide table before the run back down?

..........and was the beer worth the trip? Last time I went up there in the boat, I thought the food in the pub was most disappointing.

You will have a message saying "active content - click to run" at the top of your browser ? - If so click to allow it to run.

You have to allow java applets to run on your PC ( somewhere in internet options ).

If you cant get this running then the competition will be hard/impossible to enter....

Hi Duncan

Did you moor at the quay at wareham (as per pic) - was there someone taking cash off the boat owners ?

Paul

Paul,

er yep that's me moored at the Quay....................?

I believe you can stay 1 night at Wareham Quay, and that there are no charges associated with any stays - certainly haven't seen or been approached for dosh ever.

There's a lot of river water running down right now so the level is reasonable but it can be quite shallow on the quay at LWS so people tend to 'do a tide' coming up with the first flood and back with the second ebb.

Beers good on the Quay, little Italian rest is good too (may need to book) and there's a chippie just up the road.
