Adam F
Whilst the open coast was 'orrible today - the Solent was actually OK. Gordon and I launched Enticer at 8am this morning for a bit of late Smoothy action. Macky were hard to find at the sconce so straight over to the mark and settle in under the canopy with bacon rolls and hot tea. Action was pretty constant all day and we ended up with 15 in total, 10 to me, 5 to Gordon, but the skipper had the last laugh by bagging the best of the day (and beating Paul's earlier club record) with a nice fish at 11lb 4oz. What hard fighting beasts these are - I had kinda forgot, that searing 1st run they make, brings a smile to a damp and miserable day! Cheers Gordon. Manic Moore
Thanks Adam, good company as usual. My day was not looking good as by 1.00pm the score was 7 v 1 to Adam and I had lost 4 lots of gear as Adam was not just happy to thrash the skipper (which seems par for the course this season , If it carries on like this I will have a list of members wanting to crew for the Open) but proceeded to steer his fish through all the lines and cut a few off So a nice bonus to sneak the top fish of the day and the new club record to boot. Your right Adam, they put up a fantastic fight so I am definately looking forward to the Utopia trail away. All in all wet and windy but worth the trip Gordon
Paul D
For correction - It was Dean's fish that held the Starry record for an hour or so. I am assuming yours was a Starry as everyone we caught today were Starries. Was it a fat female fish by any chance ? Re: The fight - I nearly had one break my rod at the base as it charged off to the horizon whilst I wasn't concentrating. Fortunately Dean spotted the bent double rod ! Adam F
All females. Not massively fat though, just well proportioned. These arnt the bigges that the mark can throw up though - Ive had them well over 15lb regular in the past on the boat, but much earlier in the year - April / May time. Yes Paul, all starries bar one tiddler that was a common.
Paul D
You should have recorded at least one of the well over 15lb ones as the club record for Smoothhound ( undistinguished ) is only 15lb. The fat females are biggest when they are pregnant ( I've got a picture of Mad Mike with a pregnant female somewhere ). I think in that area the Starry Smoothhounds are the common ones ( if that makes sense ).
Adam F
This was a good few years ago on Tara and BW. Yes youre right, like bream the big females come in early in the year. However I find the spawned leaner, and later fish fight harder?? Yes - the Starries do seem to be the most common around here.
Paul D
Like this ( but a big common this time ) :-

Paul D
Squid when you can get it past the bream ( We were using whole squid to give the smoothies a chance to get to it ).
