Boat Insurance

Paul,

I've got mine insured through Bishop Skinner Marine (RYA / RNLI Offshore Members Scheme) Actual insurer is AXA

When I checked out several other companies many of them were using AXA but were either more expensive or they had deleted some conditions from the policy.

Worth giving Bishop Skinner a call.

They do say ...up to a distance of 12 miles offshore. However you can travel between two points in the UK by the most direct route even though this might take you outside the 12 mile limit, but thats not going to help you much.

Would this mean not outside 12 miles I wonder

Yes! Correct.

This means 12 miles from nearest land, and I would suggest that 95% of the time this will be sufficiant for you. As I wanted to fish mid channel occastionally I phoned them and they asked me to confirm this in writing that I would be making the occasiona trip up to 30 miles offshore - and they ammended the policy with no extra charge.

deb works for AON, one of the biggest brokers worldwide. She has said she can approach one of the account manages for a quote for club members, seeing as we have so many boats in the club. If we moved buisiness across to one insurer, this may have benefits for the club.

With many threads dedicated to the price of insurance, policy terms and conditions, small print and, I suppose ineveitably, more on claim issues than resolution I am delighted to advise complete satisfaction with Mardon following Phaeton's recent surprise contact with something hard in Poole Harbour

I have to say the process has gone extremely smoothly - engineers talking to claims underwriters, clearly laid out alternative solutions and costs and finally, amazingly, the insurers proposing/agreeing a slightly more expensive replacement approach over a strip and rebuild that would clearly take some time to accomplish and carry an element of risk of future problems. The engineers are Holes Bay following recomendations on here and elsewhere.

OK we have to get the work completed and everyone paid but even the written confirmation takes a whole load of my mind.

Even the boatyard were overly reasonable and out to help rather than take advantage!

Finally we think we may also have found out what we hit - we were passing the uptide position of a large barge used to store mooring bits (with hindsight we think it was still in it's downtide position as the tide was only lightly flooding) and it is believed that a concrete block found it's way over the side shortly before our passage........it may well be sunk in the mud by now but I will run a sonar scan onthe Lowrance unit and post it on here (at high water!) when I am back in just to check and post it on here .

What's the chances of getting back afloat before you finally fish the species comp?

I realise that this is only one view but, as others have posted, Mardon are competitively priced with good renewal service etc and here's a first hand claims experience. Having been with them for about 12 years I hope I can manage another 30!
