Paul D
Took today off work as the forecast was looking good and indeed the forecast was spot on. It was like a millpond out there - flat as a pancake and hardly a breeze ( it was actually windier when we returned to Christchurch than when in the bay ). Crew for the day was Clive Tyler and we first tried for some bass but fish were not playing ball. Then headed over to X-Ray where it was dogfish after dogfish. Chatted to Pink Squid over at Swanage and sounded the same there. Then headed over to the ledge and was joined by Stargazer. As Stargazer arrived Clive noticed fish on the surface, so tried with the plug. As I was reeling in I noticed my other rod bending over and line running off. Threw the spinning rod to Clive and grabbed the other rod. This was no dogfish and a short scrap saw a nicely proportioned bass on the surface and deftly netted by Clive. Bass weighed in at 7lb and was deeply hooked. Managed to get the hook out after a bit of effort and then took around 10 mins of holding the bass in the water before it sailed off with a flick of its tail. Result Beautiful sunny day - nice company - nice bass and a day off work. Doesn't get much better than this. Now planning a Friday Evening/night trip. alun j.
What a nice day!!!.........shorts and T-shirt still all that's needed! Snatched a few hours between my 'nursing duties' and slipped out mid-mornng from Mudeford. Absolute flat calm.........water temp. 15.5C......and loads of fishy action on the surface Pleasantly surprised to find plenty of mackerel still about......these are now stuffing themselves with fry..........and even caught a sizeable bass on feathers whilst bagging up for bait. Tried inshore.........in my vain attempt to get amongst the triggers........but only found tiddly bream [ it still is summer in the bay!]. Moved out to the sand banks of X-ray area [ to get a few doggies for tomorrow's club event] ; found the inevitable but also latched into somethings much more feisty .........first was a smoothhound[starry and small]......next was thorny and much bigger [8 lbs. is not big, but a good size for the table!!two nice wings for later in the week] Quick chat with Paul on Neo [who also seemed to be enjoying the day] before a quick dash home at 2. Smooth 22knts back into the Run and not even a bump over the Ledge. BBQ'd mackeral for supper............Summer's last fling...these next few days?? Alun. Speciman
Fished Southbourne Rough mid morning to mid afternoon from my kayak - saw a Raider fly passed - we waved to each other. Was this a member here? Caught lots of a dogfish, pout and a small smoothhound. Paddled up to the ledge tried spinning for a while - no luck although a number of garfish followed my lure to the yak. Fished Christchurch Harbour for a while then headed back in. Lovely day to be out.
corky
Flew past a small kayak on southborne rough as we headed to the ledge yesterday, waved to him and thought- brave fella, even on a day like today I need something more substancial to feel safe.. Must be a great way to sneak up on fish, cheap on fuel as you just buy mars bars and talk about mobility - you could almost carry that on the train Fishing on the ledge was slow but weather more than made up for it, had a good size garfish chase in my lure but no bass as we had hoped for. Headed to xray for the last two hours of flood and hammered the old dogies, half a dozen black bream showed, a smoothound and the usual pout or "flubbers" as the old man calls em. No more bass today ( had one here tuesday) but did have a couple of mackerel grab bare bream rig hooks.. Stopped to use the last of our worm at poole rocks on the way back and caught a super male cuckoo wrasse, just under a lb but colours as vivid as i have seen. Not as suprising as yesterday though when we stopped mid harbour channel at "aunt betty" again just to use up last few worms and dad pulled in a decent size gurnard ! Funny what the harbour can throw up..
great white
Nice one Paul A great fish and sounds like you had to work hard on the catch and release part, well done. It seems like the summer fish are hanging on. Sam says that someone was catching mackeral on the Quay yesterday Charlie
Deep Sea Dean
Fished the beach at Southbourne tonight after hearing good things. Not a lot about though just a load of pout and a couple small smoothound. Saw a chap out in a yak. Was that you Speciman?
