jack
I was in Poole yesterday,so decided to check out fees etc. for Baiter Slip. I was only marginally surprised to see that there was no " winter rate". for launching, but thats life these days. However I was annoyed to see 3 men struggling like mad to drag thier smallish R.I.B.on its trailer across a Shingle bank ,some 8-10 foot wide and 1 foot deep about half way down the slip . Surely if the public are to pay for a facility they might at least expect to find it useable. If the council can pay a Warden to check on parking tickets on Baiter,he could at least be asked to periodicallly report on the state of the slipway. It did not get like that in a couple of days.I intend to use the slip with my small inflatable,to go flattie hunting, but I know I cannot manage to drag it over that shingle bank on my own.To whom does one [complain] draw the fact to thier attention.? jack
Sinbad
Jack, You should check out lake road up at hamworthy if you have something smaller than a warrior or the like, the Parking is free, and you can drive onto the beach to connect the trailer! There's a steel gate and cross bar to deter the larger boats. Paul
charlieannear
I'm a Baiter User! As far as I know it's certainly the most 'affordable' option, at Edited November 1, 2007 by charlieannear
Maverick Martin
There is a council dept responsible for the slipway (highways?) but I can't remember which one it is. When the slip has been blocked previously a phone call was made then a nice man from PBC came along with a tractor and cleared it. Perhaps the dept is marked on your pass charlie? I always used to keep a shovel in the van during winter months when using the slipway, just in case. Martin
plaicemat
Jack, there's the link in the chain that's missing; Martin doesn't need the slip any more so doesn't carry a shovel to clear it. How selfish can one man get? Terry.
duncan
I suspect the shingle did arrive on a single tide cycle with appropriate wind conditions - certainly happens as Rockley that way rather than a gradual build up.
jack
Thanks for chipping in,everyone. I dont really mind the fees. As my inflatable is only 10' and as well as the trailer, has its own wheels attached,I could manage it on my own as a doddle. But not across a shingle bank as I am a decrepit old major back sufferer.I could not even make use of Martin's redundant shovel,Although I would be only too pleased to give him a ring when the slip is blocked,if he feels he would like to keep his hand in. I have checked out Lake road and could manage there,my problem then is parking in Poole.with the car and boat to pick up worm,I planned to walk to the shop from Baiter,I am a picky old sod are'nt I ?.Still with a little thought there is nothing that can't be overcome. Coddy
Jack It depends which way you come into Poole, there is a large car park behind, well down one side, of Wessex Angling, then down the road to the town centre and off to Hamworthy.
