boat advice pls

I haven't yet managed to get to one of your meetings and join the club, but I wondered if the members would give me the benefit of their experiences.

I am looking at buying a much newer boat. I rather like the look of the Quicksilver Pilothouse - small cabin, large cockpit, walkaround deck and wheelhouse (for those cold winter days), but still has a bit of speed in case the grandchildren want a ringo!!

I would be really grateful for any views on these boats (good or bad), especially if anyone has the diesel. I am trying to work out economy-v-price-v-speed but there is very little info on various engines fuel economy on the internet. OR if anyone can suggest an alternative ????

Thankyou.

Hi Chris

Have a look on my web site www.fishing-boats.info link on my signature

I have a few reports on the QS range

If Tom was around, I think he is working at the Boat Show, I am sure he would suggest a number of other boats to look at so similar money, not mentioning any makes. wink.gifwink.gifwink.gif

Regards

Thanks for that Coddy - like the website! - off to the Boat Show on Wednesday, but won't get much impartial advice there !!!!

If the Excell boatshow is the same as in previous years and from what i have heard this year there won't be much in the way of small boats at the show for us fisher types to look at

Martin

BTW Southampton is by far the best show for smaller fishing type craft

Before buying your boat I would highly recommend talking to club members at a meeting and find out what each person has and possibly more importantly - why!

and which boats are most popular.

You will most likely get a "warts and all" report on each boat you are looking at and therefore be able to use more balanced judgement on your purchase.

I would then recommend you take a couple of trips out (as crew) on the type of boat you are planning - just to make absolutely certain that your choice meets your needs.

Hmmm Chris.....

there's no such thing as a boat that runs on fresh air - (if only). I was worried about the cost of fueling up, and diesel or petrol arguments...but as others will probably tell you, there are so many other factors with the type of drive unit that the fuel cost is marginal. (e.g draught, servicing costs, availability of diesel (none in christchurch for example...)

Also There's guys that harp on about how cheap their diesels are to run, and only potter arround the harbour once in a while, so are hardly going to notice the fuel costs anyway. If you're going to make passages down the coast on a regular basis then fuel is something to worry about.

I'd rather have the fun and performance when I want it, rather than not having it in the name of a few more mpg. I'd serriously recommend talking it through with a few members - you might get a few test rides as well - which you wont get from most dealers / boat show vendors

Hi Chris

I would second what others have said about talking to the Members about their own boats. you should get a warts and all review that the press reports can not give you.

Allthough Tom is in the business of selling Jennaux's he is also a good source of General information .

Without doubt trying a few if trips are offered is the best way biggrin.gif . If the weather is nice and the fish are playing it will be even better biggrin.gifbiggrin.gif

The petrol/diesel debate is a big issue but remember that deregation on red diesel ends Nov 2008 sad.gif when the cost of diesel to liesure boats will increase weep.gif . and even the trade do not know how much it will increase ph34r.gif .

Happy hunting

Charlie

Hi Chris

I spent last year looking around at boats, I ended up buying a Merry Fisher 625 from Tom. I just can't praise the boat enough, okay its not a 100% fishing boat but I wanted an all rounder, but its really really good. I've got a 115hp outboard and even though its got less than 12 hrs on it we're getting about 2 gallons per hour running around the harbour and bay at anything from 5 to 28 knots.

I'd gladly show you the boat if you wanted to have a look.

Cheers !

Stu

Hi Chris

Just like you i have not been able to make a meeting to join the club yet.

Chris i bought a Quicksilver 630 sd in June 2007 my wife Jackie and I have only missed two weekends in 2007 biggrin.gif

I can not fault the boat in any way. She has been fanstastic in bad weather and fuel is just great.

If we can get to a meeting i will be only to glad to take you out for the day as we launch from Cobbs most weekends.
