Long distance in search of a blonde

An early start sees my alarm going off t 4.30am, and by 5pm were on our way to Keyhaven with Dom and my dad in persuit of a 1st blonde ray after scraping the ice oft the car.

we have the boat in early doors as we rush to beat low water, but shouldn't have worried as there was loads of water waiting for us. The new marks are in the gps and we start the trek ahead of a 30mile round trip that will see us fish a new area aswel an an exercise of seeing how the boat will cope with much longer trips.

Out on the mark, after cruising at 18 knots with 3 on board, the water is mirror calm, and watching the sun come up in good company was bliss.

Squid, and squid and maccy cocktail baits on 5/0 pennals and 80lb trace were the order of the day, and we were hoping the trace was also going to be strong enough incase we hit a rouge conger.

The tide race was immence, and 2lb lead was needed, but hauling it up in the 135ft depth wasn't quite as enjoyable.

We had bites from the off, mainly LSD's but a few small hounds were also thrown in. Dom then hit and banked a couple of average thornbacks, before my Dad landed the best hound of the day, a cracking starry that was just over 13lb.

We all had another ray before Dom hooked into the target species. A big Blonde hung deep and with his rod locked over, he was making no ground. He wrestles with a but pad before sickingly the line falls slack.

Just as the action starts to really get going, the anchor starts to slip, we re anchor the the tidal force was that strong and we struggled to hold onto the mark.

A move inshore proves fruitless and we then decide to try the solent for the last hour as the wind picked up.

Out of the wind, we shelter in Totland Bay, no real mark, but a few fish were present. I drop a small bass on a double squid bait, before Dom starts the doggie hauling. I then get in on the act with a couple of Jumbo Pout.

On the way in, Hurst has really kicked up and looked very messy so be took the option of staying as close to shore as we could, before opening up to 23 knots on the flats.

All in all, a very enjoyable session, the boat performed well, and we finished with 29.2 miles on the gps and with fuel left in the 25l tank, i'm pretty chuffed as the 95 year two stroke was pretty economical, especially as there were 3 on board.

Off to work now, tired, but happy...pics to follow later, or in the morning.

What a great day to be out. The weather gods were obviously on our side for once. The fishing was good only disapointment was the one that got away but isnt that always the case. Not to worry, im sure there will be plenty of opportunities in the summer.

Great company

Great fishing
