Duncan F (bathclaret)
Does anybody have any advice about using the slip at Kimmeridge? For those of us coming from the (North) west it looks like the closest launching point to pick up some bream off the ledges and/or Chapman's pool areas. But someone told me the launch area can be a bit iffy due to rocks. Thoughts please on whether this is a good idea... Thanks Duncan
Adam F
Duncan, You are right - Kimmeridge is very convieniant for accessing areas to the West of Poole. However..... It offers very little protection from winds in the South. If you search the forum back a good few years (2005?) you'll ready a pretty scarey incident Bob F and I had in our boats trying to get ashore with a big southerly sea running - could have ended alot worse. Anyhow! It's not all doom and gloom. A northly wind or Southerly (W or E) under a F4 'should' be OK. The slip itself is OK. Pretty steep (about the same as West Bay) but the lower portion is a little broken. The only problem is trying to launch or retreave at LW - the slip finishes and is just rocks.... Getting out of the bay at LW is also tricky - it's pretty shallow and it you do catch your prop the bottom is rocks, not sand.. Launching a 175 would be fine, but you'll need a 'proper' 4WD. Parking is fine. Not trying to put you off, just making you aware. Bottom line for me is Kimm. is great on a good forecast. If it's iffy - the saftey margin afforded by Poole or Weymouth is a better bet. ATB Adam
Manic Moore
Hi Duncan I launch my 165 quite often at Kimmeridge and as Adam said, avoid low springs and anything to breezy from the south and you should be ok. The slip is slighly steep but shallower than Weymouth but that just means you dont have to back in too far. Getting the boat out, again, I agree its likely you will need a 4x4 except when everything is very dry and high tide as the 175 is quite a heavy boat. For me like you said, great access to some good marks Good luck Gordon
Duncan F (bathclaret)
Thanks chaps - exactly what I needed to know. The 4x4 towcar is no problem (XC90). Forecast this w/e is for North Easterlies, which is one of the reasons I thought of Kimmeridge as it should have a bit of shelter, although I guess we're all waiting on how strong they'll be. Thanks again for the advice, Duncan
Duncan F (bathclaret)
Flippin heck Adam - out of interest I did go searching for the tale of your adventure at Kimmeridge. Really glad I did - learned some very valuable info I hope I'll never need! Duncan Edited May 15, 2008 by bathclaret
