Swainiac
Guys, I'm new to rod repairs, I normally wang out and buy a new one, however, my fave rod, yeah, the one that landed my top Bass, has lost the centre of the butt ring. Ive bought a replacement, but when it comes to re whipping, should I double whip it on?? Also, I'd like to repaint the tip section, as the dayglo orange is very faded, so should I rub back the tip section with fine wet n' dry, paint over it, then varnish on top, or just leave the paint layer, with no varnish?? Cheers guys, sentimental Rich.......or is it just plain mental Rich??
Adam F
Rich, it all depends on what type of finish you are looking for. If you want to relicate the orginal I'd suggest going to a tackle shop and having a specialist rod builder do it. The whipping is relativly easy provided you take your time - its the epoxy high build varnish that is tricky to achieve. Tackle shops do sell it in kits, about 12 quid I think, but its a lot of hastle for 1 ring, better to leave it to the pros. However if you arent to fussed, here's how to do it: 1.) Tape the ring into position using a little masking tape 2.) Buy a PROPER whipping thread for sea rods, dont use cotton! 3.) Tie it off using a hitch at the leg of the ring 4.) Begin whipping by rotating the rod not the whiiping spool 5.) No need to double whip, it can make it messy as the thread often wont lay parralel 6.) Finish with a couple of half tucks 7.) Coat the whipping with Dope to secure it 8.) Apply 2/3 coats of varnish over the top. 2.3 thin coats are always better than 1 thick one!! Their is a 'proper' way to secure a whipiing, but its far to complicated to type here. Its one of those thinsg that once youve seen it, its easy - like splicing for example! If you need a hand, I will do it for you - just pop it over! Re. the dayglo bit - leave it as it is...you will ruin the look of the rod if you try to spray it, better to leave it faded, it looks like its been used then!
