Coddy
Hi all Following a discussion at the club meeting over radar reflectors I was wondering about horns or hooters on boats. I use a canister of compressed air, hand held type but have been thinking of an electric version permanently mounted. I feel horns are just as important as radar reflectors to attract attention or to warn others. I was wondering what other members use? Is electric the way to go or do they get corroded up with the salty atmosphere? Anyone have any thoughts? Coddy
gaffa
Dave , When I bought Reflections 2 over 3 years ago it was fitted with an electric horn commonly found in most chandlers for around
Brian
Hi Dave I now use the handheld type, I've had "marine" electric air horns in the past and they've corroded. Though I'm thinking about fitting plastic "FIAM" air horns the same as on my vehicle.
great white
I have the electric ones on the cabin roof and they certainly seem loud enough, nice to be able to operate from the helm position, but most of the volume goes forward. You can get exceptionaly loud ones like we use at work for racing sound signals, but they are dearer. I also carry a gas horn in my grab bag. For years just carried one of those on Great White. They are certainly loud and can be aimed at people who you are trying to get the attention of. [usually WAFI sailing at you without crew on deck] or at the shore if sending SOS. Our RIB boxes at work also carry the trumpet type you blow through, I would not carry this alone but they make a reasonable back up in a grab bag.
