Member Removed
We have just been advised that the drive plate in the gearbox is broken , so we have no transmission. Very luckily while under guarantee. Does anyone know what might have caused this? For example using the engine to pull an anchor up...??? There were no noises or sign of anything evidently wrong until we strated, cast off and found we were drifting towards a Sunseeker
Maverick Martin
No idea what would have caused that Patrick but its almost certainly not caused by driving out the anchor. Members haul out there anchors with motors as small as 30hp outboards so a diesel will have not problems at all doing this excercise. Good job your engine is still in warranty I only wish mine was BTW how are your anchor hauling skills coming on? Martin
great white
Hi Patrick sorry to hear that you have a problem and good job its covered on the warranty. The cause is a hard one to guess, probably best to ask your enginer when he sees it come apart. It could be down to an impact on the prop, grounding, poor alignement, mount problems. etc etc What symtoms did you have prior to failure? Member Removed
The Volvo agent has come back with this theory. The facts were that the bolts holding on the drive plate were sheared which was said to be caused because they may not have been fully tightened in manufacture. But if this were the case, then I would have expected to hear some clanking noises when the boat was under power which we didn't at any point. What I am now wondering is could the reverse have happened? The bolts were overtightened, then in frosty conditions, they contracted and broke. Immediately, before this happen the boat was on racks @ Cobbs Quay - and there was some severe overnight frost during that time.
